Kate ought to have known this prior to getting the ring. Hopefully she learned from Otto eating the earrings! (I know Richard Palmer said there was no Otto, but there have been reports of both James and Michael walking a dog of Otto's description since he supposedly chewed the pearl earrings, thus I'm inclined to believe Kate was careless enough to leave the earrings on her night stand).
