King Alfonso XII of Spain died November 25, 1885. When he did his wife Queen Maria Christina was expecting a baby. The throne was vacant. During this period, Maria Christina ruled as regent until her son Alfonso XIII was born. She continued as regent until Alfonso XIII attained his majority in 1902.
