The Prince of Wales asked for a formal separation on November 25, 1992. This was made public in a House of Commons announcement on December 9, 1992. Could Diana as The Princess of Wales have asked for a formal separation?

From what I read, it was something wanted by both Charles and Diana, a mutual decision. They were pretty much living separate lives in any case.

i read diana since late 1980s tried talk with charles about a divorce but he didnt wanted any conversation about this matter, because his position and also because his mother was totally against that. james colthurst, her friend who helped with the morton book, said after the book charles accepted for 1rst time talk about a separation. diana rather prefered charles start the whole separation thing

Later in 1992 the Queen insisted Charles and Diana visit South Korea. the body language of the two showed how badly they were getting along. And soon after the separation was announced.
