Yes, in the past monarchs got to solely decide what was best for their country but this was in times of absolutism, which in my opinion was a despicable way of ruling. They did help their nation is someways but it was to their benefit to do so. I guess the concept the power of the state and that of the king was shady especially before the concept of a constitutional monarchy was established.

I believe that the complaining never changed, it seems to be inherent to their position in life. They've always wanted to do the bare minimum, mantain a lavish lifestyle, be praised for doing what is actually their duty and complain about what they belive is owed to them.
  laugh Nowadays, either they open their mouths to whine publicly because they think that makes them more relatable or the press and social media let's us know about the complaints they've issued in private. Times have changed and we don't tolerate what our ancestors used to tolerate. That being said, I love to know more about the monarchs of old and all the decisions (both good and bad) that they've made and to think about how that has shaped our history.

Hello Lady Laura Hi flower!

At the time, the royals were better educated, did fight in battles, and did make HUGE personal sacrifices for the sake of their nation; I believe those past generations of royals deserve respect and deserve to be honored. Just giving birth with no painkiller, that takes STRENGTH and I admire that alone.

@Notsugarhere:
Regarding Letizia, I’m not sure if you follow Spanish gossip sites and forums. I do, and Letizia has had an awful reputation since the beginning. They announced the engagement earlier than planned because the press had discovered the dirt about her and they were going to rip her to shreds. A lot of whitewashing has been going on, from her affair as a teenager to her teacher, whom she would later marry and then abandon, her affairs, nude portraits and rumoured sex tape while working in Mexico, to the fact that she had a live-in boyfriend who was blindsided when she left him for Felipe. There are well substantiated rumours that she worked as an escort and one of the rich guys she serviced introduced her to Felipe. Her fast track career was allegedly due to her affair with a TV executive and later to an effort to make her seem more successful in view of her royal marriage. She was known to her colleagues as Fictizia, which could be translaterd as Liar. There are countless stories about her bad temper, mala leche as the Spanish say, her arrogance, insolence and lack of breeding. She apparently treats her employees terribly and she never fit in with Felipe’s friends and family. Neither did she adapt to the close knit group of European royals, contrary to other princesses and queens. She also insists on working hours from 9 to 5,and week-ends off. And her physical transformation is absolutely stunning. Check her pictures from 2003-2007 and see how she had another face. Anyway, she’s awful and disliked in Spain and Kate is a saint compared to her.

Same here, had no idea about Letizia! But I only watch her superficially, so no wonder I have no clue, but I often read how she's unliked (by the Spanish, incl here easter-egg-basket )

@ladylaura careful with the language  sauer

About Letizia there are many other threads in this subboard to comment about her. Let's keep this one Letizia free and about more historic royals and places  thankyou

This is one of my fave queens if only for the name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violant_of_Hungary Sad that the wiki page is so short. Her husband could be the most important king on the aragon side https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_I_of_Aragon

Also today catalunya celebrates losing to the austrian side during the war of succession https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day_of_Catalonia

Oh Laura sweety  there
I think Alex meant that the word *pavement walkers* was a bit too... direct, not that your whole post was bad.
Next time if you want to use strong language use the * sign like this: that idiot h**ker!
Or use an euphemism like: my god what a short skirt, she looks like a real 'pro'  (we all know what you mean but it looks better and keeps it PG friendly Cool)

BTW the only way that word was let through is because you used the plural form (you're a clever girl! easter-wink) because *pavement walker* is changed automatically by our naughty-word filter
I guess the mods have to add the plural forms as well, never thought of that..... tehe
