I think it has less to do with mental illness than the inability to handle growing up and moving into life; Harry is clearly trying to still be a young buck who is cheeky and full of life with a great future, still trying to live as much of a childhood as possible, but regrettably he's way past that age and point in time in his life. He should never have done the interview and should stop trying to be carefree and focused entirely on being young. He should be seasoned in duties and he should be a lot more along.

I think it's more about how they spent their teens and twenties than about inheriting their mother's alleged mental illnesses.

I have a mental illness and I didn't waste my time in bars and clubs and mess with the wrong type of men; Harry knows better, which is why he has a PR courtier and did this interview. He's playing for sympathy and it's rightly not working out. He has no business complaining about his life in any area. I wouldn't say he's entirely unaware of his actions, but he is unsure of how to adjust to a world where he isn't the center of everyone's hope and where his trivial problems are cooed over. He's like a fading star who failed to improve his act and is basically unable to comprehend that his time is passing and he's no longer the center of it all. He's becoming old news.
