When Prince Philip became a British subject, he might have been expected to take his paternal dynastic name of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg.   
Genealogists at the College of Arms came up with the alternative of Oldcastle. Oldcastle was an Anglicized version of Oldenburg. Oldenburg was the German duchy where the royal house of Denmark had originated.
