King George II had intended to replace Sir Robert Walpole with Sir Spencer Compton as chief government minister. However, Walpole's generosity with the civil list settlement, combined with the influence of Queen Caroline, convinced the King to keep Walpole on.

Caroline's full name was Wilhelmina Charlotte Caroline. Had she been addressed by her first Christian name of Wilhelmina, England would have had a Queen Consort Wilhelmina.

When George II was on trips to Hanover, he refused to let Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, have a hand in government while he was gone.

King George II spoke only French until he was four. Then he learnt German and later English and Italian.

That's fine, as long as languages come eventually. Not a fan of the general monolingualism of the English-speaking world.

In 1735, King George II made Robert Walpole a gift of 10 Downing Street, now the permanent London residence of the British prime minister.

George Augustus had been only eleven when he last saw his mother Sophia Dorothea. When he came to England with his wife Caroline, he kept two portraits of Sophia Dorothea hidden in their residence.

Yes, it was very sad. I think he always wanted to release his mother from her long imprisonment when he became King but unfortunately Sophia Dorothea died before he could do so.

King George II was a keen hunter and rode frequently in pursuit of stags in Windsor Great Park.
