^Exactly, Kuei Fei. If he had married Elisabeth's sister, Princess Helene, as originally planned.

WWI would probably happened anyway although the motive would have been another.

^Alexandrine, That is quite correct that the First World War would still occur. Francis Joseph I and Empress Helene would have had different children. The heir would be different than the actual Crown Prince Rudolph. If even Francis Joseph's son by Helene had succeeded his father, something would have begun the war, if it was not the killing of Archduke Francis Ferdinand.

From May 1, 1850 until August 24, 1866 Francis Joseph was President of the German Confederation.

When Empress Elisabeth gave birth to a girl in March 1855, her daughter was named Sophia by Archduchess Sophia for Archduchess Sophia.
Not only was Archduchess Sophia Elisabeth's mother-in-law but her aunt as well. Why was Archduchess Sophia not more sympathetic to Elisabeth?

I like the name Sofia, if I had a daughter I would put the name of Sarah or Sofia ....
Do you know who are the current descendants of Sissi and Franz who are alive? Do they have any physical resemblance to them - Sissi and Franz?
I have a Sissi doll, made in Italy the year the Sissi movie was made 1955, dressed in the same clothes Sissi - Romy Schnedeir - used when she met Franz, perfect doll - https://mr.comingsoon.it/imgdb/PrimoPiano/impaginate/PrincipessaSissi_Film_StaserainTV.jpg - this same clothes and this same hat, if the photobucket had been working I would take a photo to put the link for you to see how perfect this doll is
I live in war with my father because of the doll, I take the doll and bring it to my room and put it on my piano, when I see the doll disappears, my father hides in fear that I will ruin the doll - I think he must think me stupid for thinking that I can still destroy a doll at my age huh blink --lol ...but it is not that, he is much more careful than I, and he knows it. All that is historical my father likes to save, he loves story like me .... now the doll is with him, until I find again and bring to my room  eating cookies

Do you not think Archduchess Sophie should have let Francis Joseph and Elisabeth pick out the names for their own first daughter?

I love this movie. I have a Sissi doll, made in 1951, with the clothes from the first film, from Italy, a relic, but every time I try to keep this doll in my things, my father hides it, and we stay in it, an hour I hide, another one he finds, and he hides .... we never understand who keeps the doll .... if I have a daughter one day I hope she likes Sissi as much as I do TCP painting easter egg

During her first trip to Hungary with her husband, Empress Elisabeth fell in love with this nation that exhibited so much independence. She learned the Hungarian language.

Why did Emperor Francis Joseph exclude Crown Prince Rudolf from the business of government?

Probably because Rudolph was more like his Uncle Max in outlook and disposition: more liberal-minded.

Father and son clashed a lot, they didn't get much along at all, starting with the brutal childhood Rudolf was subjected to thanks to his father FJ and granny Sophie.

Empress Elisabeth wrote poetry. Did she ever try to get it published?

Not sure, she did take pride in her abilities and viewed herself as poet (but not as great as the greats, she had respect for them..).
She left sth in the vaults in Switzerland to be opened 50 or so years after her death, everyone was excited and when they opened the box it was a bunch of her poetry...

I do not think so; back then that would have been seen as her lowering herself and she was in a position where she was NEVER allowed to do anything that might make her more appealing or accessible to the people.

I read ages ago but can't remember where that Sissi had it written into her will that her poems could only be published fifty years after her death.

She idolised the poet Heine's style but wasn't quite on the same level, though she tried! There's a very sad poem written by Elizabeth shortly after her marriage in which she compares herself to being in a prison cell. That's in 'Lonely Empress' by Joan Haslip.

I often wonder if these princes realize the damage they do when they think they've fallen in love with someone. Sissi didn't want to marry him, she just wanted a simple life, but go figure, Francis insisted and her family pressured her (despite the fact that the Dowager Empress wanted Helene to be Francis' consort) and it all just caused one big miserable mess of Sissi's life. I think Francis fell in love with Sissi's simplicity, but he didn't think of how she would feel in the matter, that much I know.
