#NotMyPrince Hashtag Uses Prince Harry's Upcoming Caribbean Visit to Resist ‘Colonisation of the Mind’

Despite the fact that most Caribbean territories have been independent from Great Britain for decades — some of them for more than half a century — the mother country continues to wield a curious influence over its former colonies.

Most regional territories, still members of the Commonwealth, follow the United Kingdom's political and judicial systems, for instance. Cricket is a hugely popular sport. People drive on the left side of the road, attach value to speaking “the Queen's English” and in many cases are captivated by all things royal, so there is some measure of excitement surrounding Prince Harry's impending visit to the Caribbean — except when it comes to a popular hashtag.

On Twitter, #NotMyPrince describes itself as an “anti-colonial welcoming committee for Prince Harry […] resisting against the colonization of the Caribbean mind”. The aim, according to the project's Tumblr, lies in “breaking the bonds of empire”.

The prince's tour is scheduled to start in Antigua on November 20, 2016. Over the course of two weeks, he will also visit St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Guyana and Barbados, where he is due to meet Barbados-born superstar Rihanna.

Do we need a Caribbean Royal Tour thread?  Alex?  Thanks.  YM

Quote
It is often joked that the smell of fresh paint heralds a visit by a member of the Royal Family.
And Clarence House in Antigua was a case in point last night as builders raced against the clock to finish restoration work ahead of Prince Harry's arrival today.
The 200-year-old former residence of the Commissioner of the Royal Navy Dockyard – complete with its own throne, an antique commode built into a chest of drawers – was a favourite spot of Princess Margaret, who spent part of her honeymoon there.
Harry is due to officially open the building this afternoon as he kicks off his Caribbean tour. The 32-year-old Prince will enjoy local music and sample cocktails 'with a Caribbean twist'.

I'm so silly.  I thought a "throne" was a real throne.

^ and ^^ It realllllly is.  I'm interested in learning more about these areas that are part of the greater whole of the BRF, i.e., how's their economy, what is the industry.  I know very little about the Caribbean and British influence, other than scant history and Princess Margaret.

Yes, nice and warm and Harry's looking sharp. Thin, trimmed beard, suit pressed! I wish I was there right now, even if the weather here is getting warmer!

So true! It's refreshing not to have her tagged onto the report. Let's hope that things continue this way because he's representing the queen on this trip so there shouldn't be any foolishness from the press.

^Well, she does get a mention, but that's par for the course and not unsurprising considering.

He also looks like he got his hair cut as well. It was much longer back during the Remembrance ceremonies.

^And his suit is tailored better!   I'm still bored with the navy blue but we take our minor victories where we find them.  thumbsup

I've been to Antiga!  What is surprising about these islands is they are not tropical - Antigua is pretty dry.  Some wealthy Brits with homes there too - Eric Clapton among others.

Lots of old forts built by the Royal Navy long ago and remnants of the buildings used for the slave trade.  Most of the people living there are descendants of the slaves.  Plus lots of tropical diseases which the British sailors had no immunity against and so thousands died in the islands of disease - not a cheery thing but a historical fact most are unaware of.

Lovely people but lots of poverty.  No industry really because of how distant they are.  Oh yes - pirates - all this pirate lore.  Used to be lots of pirates.

When we were there our tour guide who was superb painted a word picture for us of the past - when the bays and inlets were full of British naval vessels - the great sailing ships.  Really got a sense of what Empire looked like.  I loved it.

^Fascinating.  Thank you.  It's on me to do some actual reading and research and this visit has sparked that.

Apparently only 3 tabloid reporters and 2 photographers with him. Isn't that shockingly low, or is that only my perception? I suppose recent events with an actress that have peed off the press made them cut back on press people accompanying him, but wow what a blow, no? Esp for such a long tour... It's not just a long weekend, but a fortnight... Palmer said it's due to the Cambs useless but expensive India tour and budget cuts esp as it's the end of the year and even less went with Bill to Vietnam, but Vietnam was also a short visit and this is a two week tour..

Likely.

The BRF goes out of its way to snub the press and restrict them and sue them, it could well be that the press is fed up.

It's quite a shame because this is supposed to be a very important tour for the queen. She can't be pleased at the turn of events. If things don't improve with the press showing up and covering the tour, I think it'll bee considered a bust. It's a shame that a divisive figure, MM is now reported above Harry's tour and gets over 1,000 comments.  bignono
