SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Viscount - Why the Queen must NEVER step down

Among British aristocrats there has been but one topic of conversation since King Juan Carlos of Spain announced his abdication: will HM the Queen follow his example?
Now one of this country’s most prominent bluebloods, historian John Julius Norwich, has spoken out to urge Her Majesty not to renounce the throne in favour of Prince Charles — even if she becomes seriously ill.
‘The Queen should not stand down,’ Viscount Norwich tells me. ‘It doesn’t matter if she gets Alzheimer’s. I mean, George III went a bit crazy and had a Regent. The same could happen again.’

Queen and Prince Philip visit Game of Thrones film set

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have met cast and production members from Game of Thrones during a tour of the Paint Hall Studios in Belfast.

The US television series is partly filmed in the city's Titanic Quarter, and is a focal point for Northern Ireland's burgeoning film industry.

The Royal couple began their second day of engagements at Crumlin Road Gaol in north Belfast.

They are on a three-day visit.

^It's beyond astonishing how busy HM and PP, of course, are.  *Note to a couple I know*.  Love her hat et al, she looks fabulous and I'm beyond jealous that they're there.  Just too cool for school.

Smile Your Majesty!': Teenager breaches Royal protocol with daring attempt to *private body part* a selfie with the Queen during her visit to Northern Ireland

Fans of the Royal family used to be content with a handshake when they passed by in the crowd, but today the Queen's trip in Northern Ireland showed that now nothing less than a selfie will suffice.

As the 88-year-old monarch walked through St. Georges Market in Belfast, on day two of her three-day visit, a teenager from the crowd held out his phone to capture a spontaneous self-portrait with her.

The Queen, who wore a lemon coat with a matching hat, looked slightly bemused by his actions - it is not clear whether the plucky teenager manged to get his photo or if he was moved away by her anxious security detail, but unperturbed he tried again later.

Prince Andrew was the first Royal to take a selfie when he tweeted a photograph of himself during an event at St James’s Palace in April. Since then Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have posed for dozens as well as Prince Charles and the Prince Harry.

I wonder what HM is going to do with the mini-throne she was given? Gift it to Peter Phillips' little girls for their doll's house perhaps!

Or give it to Charles so he can sit on that, something to tide him over until he is officially King.

How the Queen's worn the same shoes for 50 years... and has a servant called Cinders to wear them in! Trusty black patent leather slip-ons have accompanied monarch everywhere from prison visits to Diamond Jubilee pageant

They’ve supported the Queen as she goes about her royal duties for almost 50 years, looking decorous yet never detracting attention from their sovereign, and accompanying her everywhere from prison visits to her Diamond Jubilee pageant.

And these valuable servants? Not equerries or other royal minions, but her trusty patent leather shoes, the unsung heroes of the Royal household.

It takes a team of four — not including the junior member of Buckingham Palace staff, dubbed ‘Cinders’, who has the job of wearing in her Majesty’s shoes — to produce the classic black numbers (she has other colours in the same style) which cost about £1,000. Yet the Queen certainly gets value for money out of them, wearing the same pair for years and re-heeling them when they wear out.

^That's really cool.  It would be so wonderful to have a bespoke pair of shoes.  One foot of mine is larger than the other and it's a real pain.  Only Nordstroms will sell me a pair with different sizes and I treat them like gold or I have to use stretchers.  Smart woman, HM.  Well fitting shoes are like a proper foundation for a house.

One is amused: New portrait of the Queen by acclaimed Scottish photographer shows her with a smile and a twinkle in her eye at Buckingham Palace

The Queen stands near the sheer curtains at the window, looking out with a slight smile on her face.
Acclaimed photographer Harry Benson has taken a new portrait of the 88-year-old monarch, describing it as ‘truly a highlight’ of his career.
He captured the Queen in the Audience Room at Buckingham Palace where she usually holds her weekly meeting with the Prime Minister.

Perhaps it will replace the portrait that was done by Rolf Harris.

The Harris painting of HM by Rolf Harris was awful so anything would be better!

There is no mention in the media of where the painting is at the moment. I think that it technically belongs to the BBC. It must be an embarrassment now.

Prince William supports the Queen at the Order of the Thistle cermony
The Queen led the British royals at the Knights of the Thistle ceremony in Edinburgh on Thursday.

Supported by her grandson Prince William, daughter Princess Anne and husband Prince Philip, Britain's monarch took part in the age-old service at St Giles' Cathedral.

Starting the procession from the Scottish capital's Signet Library, the Queen, Anne, William and Philip made their way along the Royal Mile, which was lined with well-wishers.

Queen names new Royal Navy aircraft carrier in Rosyth

The UK's largest warship marks "a new phase in our naval history", the Queen has said, as the vessel was officially named in her honour at a ceremony at Fife's Rosyth Dockyard.

A bottle of whisky was smashed on the hull of the 65,000-tonne HMS Queen Elizabeth - the first of two new Royal Navy aircraft carriers being built.

The Red Arrows flew over the dockyard before the ship was officially named.

First Sea Lord Admiral George Zambellas said the ship was "fit for a Queen".

"HMS Queen Elizabeth will be a national instrument of power and a national symbol of authority," he said in a speech.

"That means she will be a national icon too, all the while keeping the great in Great Britain and the royal in Royal Navy."
