The Imperial Household, the courtiers that is, are the most conservative royal/ imperial Household in the world. And they will arrange everything for the royals; what schools they attend, who they socialize with, who they can marry, if they can go on vacation and where they can go to etc.

When the Japanese Crown Prince first laid eyes on Masako, she was deemed unfit by the courtiers because she is an inch taller than he is. I mean...come on! And this is not gossip, this was publicly stated by the Crown Prince at the time of the engagement.
The Crown Prince also stated in the interview that it took him some convincing before Masako agreed to marry him and he added: "I will protect her from them". Everyone in Japan (and people who know Japan and its society) knew that he meant the Imperial Household.

Royals the world over lack a certain privacy and freedom that we all know. And they are compensated for that very nicely. But compared to the Japanese royals, the European royals have it very, very easy. A parent may hold some sway over who they marry, but there is no way that the Lord Chamberlain in f.e. Denmark who would tell Crown Prince Frederik 'no you cannot marry Mary'. Not if the Queen already gave her approval, as a mother and the monarch.

And keep in mind that Masako was raised in a rather liberal family and knew a lot of freedom before entering the IF. She studied abroad, she worked abroad, she came from a well-to-do family and she travelled extensively and all of a sudden she had to give that all up. And like her mother-in-law, she was not able to cope with the pressure, the lack of freedom, the expectations and with the talking behind her back by courtiers etc. Add to that the pressure of delivering a child (she had a number of miscarriages before her daughter was born) and even the strongest person would snap.

But it was good to see her at the state-visit of the Dutch King and Queen. The couples have been friends for many years, the Japanese couple vacationed in The Netherlands a few years ago, which was also part of the recovery of Masako: away from the suffocating court. And the choice of The Netherlands was also made because her parents lived in The Netherlands. Her father at the time being one of the judges on the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
There was a lovely photo-shoot at the time where little Amalia and little Aiko were the stars of the shoot:
