A royal procession of his own! Prince Philip, 97, enjoys a horse and carriage ride at Windsor - after skipping the opening day of Ascot for a second year running

Duke of Edinburgh snapped in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Wednesday
Prince Philip did not join the royal family on the first day of Ascot on Tuesday
He was previously seen taking in the air in the castle grounds on Monday

Prince Philip's four sisters who wed Nazis, a gay uncle and his mother who was locked in an asylum: The extraordinary reason William's making a controversial visit to Israel

Prince William due to travel to Israel to visit the grave of his great-grandmother
Princess Alice of Greece was Prince Philip's mother and his four eccentric sisters
The family courted controversy for their political views and acquaintances

Citing this as reason for Bill's visit to Israel is one bs spin too far.
Still worth a read, a compact summary on Phil's family.

I think it BS. William probably rarely thinks of the great grandmother or the "eccentric sisters." If he thinks of them at all.

The reason for the visit to Israel is because the Foreign and Commonwealth Office want the visit to be made known.

That he is going to visit his great-grandmother's grave may be as a personal favour to his grandfather or father or because it is simply 'expected' of him.

Prince Philip's mother Princess Alice of Greece, is buried in a church there. She was deeply religious, founded her own Order of nuns, and asked to be buried near the Mount of Olives, in the Convent of St Mary Magdalene at Gethsemane.

In addition Grand Duchess Elizabeth - Princess Alice's aunt - the elder sister of the last Tsarina and one of Prince Philip's grandmother's sisters.

Princess Alice - 2nd daughter of Queen Victoria had four well-known daughters who reached adulthood.

The eldest was named Victoria and she had four children - Alice, George, Louise and Louis. Alice is Prince Philip's mother, Louis was Lord Mountbatten, George the 2nd Marquis of Milford-Haven and Louise became Queen of Sweden.

Elizabeth married the Grand Duke Sergei of Russia and after his assassination founded her own order or nuns. She was murdered by the Bolsheviks and was eventually buried in Israel.

Alexandra - married Nicholas II and was murdered by the Bolsheviks and is now interred in the Fortress of St Peter and St Paul in St Petersburg.

The younger Princess Alice was very fond of her Aunt Elizabeth and badly affected by the deaths of her two aunts. She followed her aunt Elizabeth's lead in founding an order of nuns and also requested to be buried beside her in Israel. It took nearly two decades for the British government and the Israeli governments to be able to agree to allow that to happen.

In my cold black heart, I hope Liz cancelled because Angelina Jolie was going to be there and not because she's sick.  Cool

I hope Brad gets time with those children. Her daughters (except Zahara) dress scruffily. And I understand there are issues with Maddox (who is exempt from having to spend time with Brad because of his being of age).

The Queen 'is refusing to have surgery on her knees despite struggling to get up after sitting because she does not want to miss any engagements'

Her Majesty, 92, has worsening pain and now struggles to get up after sitting
Known for robust health, she previously carried on despite cataract surgery
Instead she opted to wear sunglasses at events such as the Epsom Derby in May

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5905857/Queen-refusing-knee-surgery-does-not-miss-royal-engagements.html

Imo this is bs. If she really needed surgery she'd have surgery. She is likely avoiding surgery as long as she can, because surgery in old age is very very bad, it can offset dementia and really impact quality of life and possibly shorten your lifespan. There are plenty of reasons why she's not having surgery (yet), "not wanting to miss any engagements" sure as heck ain't one of them. Besides, she's missed engagements before when she had to. It's hardly the end of the world.

Warm enough, ma'am? Queen dons traditional velvet robes and a white plumed hat as she's joined by Prince William and Princess Anne for the Order of the Thistle service on a VERY sunny day in Edinburgh

Queen looked resplendent as she took part in ceremony at St Giles' Cathedral
Duke of Cambridge and Princess Royal also wore ceremonial robes for service
Thistle Service takes part once every two years to install new members of Order

What is with the clenched jaw?  Normally reserves that for annoyance when on an engagement with council cal.

The Order of the Thistle ceremony only occurs every two years but when it does happen it is always in July during the Queen's week in Edinburgh for 'Holyrood Week' when she officially resides at the Palace of Holyrood House and conducts engagements across Scotland from there.

I think he wanted to take a long leave and "be with the baby and the children and be a hands on father, blablabla. I think the Queen felt enough of the indulging him and told him to get busy. He is resentful. I wonder when Kate will make an appearance, maybe the Queen will finally put her foot down with her and tell her to step up royal duties. It's not as if she works 35 or 40 hours a week.
