Royal couple struggle to win over Swedish public

Published: 6 Jun 13 09:36 CET | Print version

In their plush Manhattan apartment, Sweden's Princess Madeleine and her future husband, Anglo-American Christopher O'Neill, live a life far away from the Swedish throne.

The soon to be 31-year-old was the least liked member in a survey carried out by TNS-Sifo in December last year. On a scale of one to five, she scored just 2.8, compared with 3.0 for her brother, 3.3 for her father and lagging her sister's 4.2 points.

Pollster Jon Andersson attributed the result to "the fact that the princess has not had an especially strong presence in Sweden and didn't appear in the media", unlike Victoria, whose every move in Stockholm is closely followed by journalists.

The announcement of the engagement in October revived some of the media's interest in her, especially since little was known about O'Neill.

Elisabeth Tarras-Wahlberg, a former director of the royal court's press department, told daily Svenska Dagbladet the New York financier was "a stable person, mature".

But O'Neill sparked controversy in November last year when he made an obscene gesture at a paparazzi photographer.

"Chris does not seem to understand his role," historian and family friend Herman Lindqvist told tabloid Aftonbladet.

Since then, many Swedes view the London- and Switzerland-raised securities analyst with suspicion.

He has declined taking a royal title, which would require him to become Swedish and give up his job, and the couple are expected to return to New York after their honeymoon

Good for the Swedes that they don't seem to be fooled. Something seems really odd about this character.

Princess Victoria of Sweden coordinates with the Indian summer weather in a fitted floral dress on a visit to the United Nations

n her visit to the United Nations in New York City today, Princess Victoria of Sweden coordinated with the Indian summer weather in a fitted floral frock.

The 36-year-old royal wore her most diplomatic smile as she was photographed shaking hands with some of the organization's key members and signing the United Nations guestbook.

After seeing to official business, the mother-of-one blended in with her surroundings as she struck a pose in a colorful flower garden along the East River.

Looking perfectly polished, the princess paired her black, red and white three-quarter length dress with black pumps and black dangly earrings.

She combed her hair back in a chic and youthful ponytail, and kept her look fresh with minimal make-up.

Victoria - who has a one-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle, with her former personal trainer husband Prince Daniel - greeted several key UN members on her official visit.

Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel delight onlookers as they visit Hackney

Princess Victoria of Sweden and her husband Prince Daniel were all smiles as they were greeted by a crowd of onlookers in east London on Thursday when they made an official visit to Hackney Community College. It was the college’s second royal visit in two days – as the Duke of York had visited just one day earlier.

The Swedish royals are on a two-day trip to London that includes a meeting with mayor Boris Johnson and a visit to Cambridge. The elegant Princess, who wore an on trend monochrome dress with her hair swept back in a bun, was in good spirits, sharing a joke with her husband.

Crown Princess Victoria on private visit to Queen ElizabethThursday 7 November 2013
Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel is in London, and on Thursday afternoon they visited Buckingham Palace.

Queen Elizabeth appreciate clearly the relations between the British and Swedish royal family, and offered this afternoon Victoria and Daniel on afternoon tea at the castle. Otherwise, it's something that only very special people vouchsafed,

Crown Princess Couple is on an official visit to England, and this is the first official trip for the couple since their wedding took place 19 June 2010 in Saint Nicolaus Church in Stockholm.

It is also Victoria and Daniel's first joint trip after Princess Estelle came into the world 23 February 2012 at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.

During the evening, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel continue their official program, which among other things offers an event at the Swedish Embassy in London, in close cooperation with the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain, will hold a business reception. The reception offers a series of lectures in order to link the heads of the leading business together.

Crown Princess Victoria came high in the airThursday 14 November 2013

Crown Princess Victoria was high in the air as she yesterday visited Skogbergets wind farm in the town of Piteå, far up in the Swedish forests.
Crown Princess Victoria got wind curls when she visited Sweden's large wind farm that produces as much power as two nuclear power plants.

It is planned that 1,000 wind turbines - with a value of 45 billion Danish kroner - to spin when the project is finished.

This corresponds to an energy performance as two Barsebäck works - all in the middle of the deserted forest in a sparsely populated area, called Mark settlement, near Piteå Municipality, where the population is six people.

The Crown Princess was with a delegation from the square hoisted all the way up to the top of one of the unfinished mills. It is 138 meters high.

The turbines are indeed important. They built to a height of 200 meters and have a rotor diameter of up to 130 meters - so there was good reason to wear a safety helmet across the windswept princess lures.
