The Royal Gossip tech manual
A simple guide to the main tools of our forum

Chapter one : Welcome and intro
First of all hello and welcome to Royal gossip forum!  hello
My name is akasha2411 and I’m one of the mod’s in this place.
This guide is meant as a help for those among you who are new to the forum and don’t know how to do some of the tech stuff like, quoting, starting a new topic, opening a poll, linking to a picture or website, changing  your avatar or signature banner.
Now I’m not a techgeek myself so I’m going to try and explain these  things in a very simple and hopefully understandable language!
I’m going to use screen shot’s to show what I’m talking about from time to time.
I hope that this guide will help you but should you still have questions after reading this don’t hesitate to ask one of the mod’s , after all that what were here for!
Greets
Akasha2411

Chapter two: in the beginning…

Ok let’s get started, this is how our main index page looks to me.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/RGmain.png
Four big parts: welcome, British family, royal families and non-royal things. Each part has several  boards like: introduce yourself here, forum support & banners and in my case the mod board as well (it’s invisible to regular users) some boards have sub or child boards like the test kitchen in the support board.
In front of the titles you’ll see a symbol  that can have three different colours: grey, light blue or dark blue. Grey means no new posts, light blue new posts in the child board but not in the main board and dark blue new posts in the main board. If you click the symbol it will list only the topic’s with new posts. So you don’t have to go search for them in the main list.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/mainindex.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/RGmainunreadtopicslist.png
Hey what’s this? huh I clicked the light blue symbol on the HM board but the it says no new topics? nervous
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/mainindexoopsy.png
Ah yes, for the child boards you have to open the main board first (in this case HM) and then on the symbol in front of the child board to get to the list of new posts.  easter-wink
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/RGmainunreadtopicscildboards.png
Now if you want to have a big list of all topic’s on the forum with new posts in them there a very easy way, go to the main index and click ‘unread posts since last visit’ it will give you a list of all topic’s with new posts in them. I prefer to read new posts board by board but if you want to have an quick over view it’s a great shortcut! thumbsup
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/RGmainunreadtopics.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/recentunreadtopics.png

Chapter three: posting

Now that you have read some topic’s and posts you want to add your two cents right? That’s easy enough really, underneath the last post you will see a couple of buttons just click ‘reply’ a new window will open in which you can type. This is how it looks:
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreply.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/replywindow.png
After you have your message typed (and hopefully proofread) you click the ‘post’ button and that’s it, you just added your opinion to our forum!

If you want to add a smiley to the text just click the one you like and a little code will show up on your text  like this one : thumsup :  don’t worry it’s normal. Now we offer more smiley’s then those shown in here just push the ‘more’ link to see our extra smiley's for special occasions like birthday’s etc
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplysmiley.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/replywindowextrasmileys.png
If you want to see what your text looks like before you post it, click the ‘preview’ button, it shows you how your comment looks on the general board with smiley’s and all!
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplysmileypreview.png
Now other than smiley’s you have a few buttons to change the look of your text:
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplychangetext.png
you can use italic’s, bold , underline, scratch out, make it glow and move it. You can change the placement of your text: right, centre, left, make it bigger and use a different font or colour. It’s a bit like a small MS word program. I’m not going explain every little button, using them is simple enough: mark the text you want to change, click the button and once again code will appear in your text, push preview to see the effect on board.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplychangetextexample.png
You can play around with these effects in our test kitchen if you like.

Now underneath those layout buttons you have four little tool buttons (at least that’s what I call them) use these buttons, to add a picture to your text , use a hyperlink, enter code, or quote other ppl.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplytoolbuttons.png
I don’t use the image button alot, I prefer linking to a picture (it take less bandwidth from our forum server and links look nicer) and I have no idea what that code button is for (remember I’m not a tech dude and entering code sounds pretty techny to me so..)
But I use the quote button and the hyperlink quite a lot (once I figured out how they worked that is! hall-whistle)
The quote button is a simple but great tool to use if you want to answer to part of a post of a member a few posts ago (as a mod I have to ask you, please do not quote the post directly above yours  just use the little ^ mark instead)
Now how to do it. Click the button and code will appear, now scroll down your page you will see the other posts, mark the part you want to quote, copy it (right click) and paste it (right click again) in between the code. Push preview and tada!
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyquote.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyquotemarktext.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyquotecopypaste.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyquoteprevieuw.png
Now I don’t just use this button to quote my fellow posters I also use it to show small summaries of articles I link too it’s simple: just copy/paste the text you want to quote in between the code. This is how I usually post an new article.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyqoutearticleprevieuw.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyqoutearticle.png
If you want to quote a whole post it’s even simpler, just click the ‘insert quote’ button it will copy the whole post and name the poster who wrote it in to your text. This is how it looks in preview .
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyinsertquote.png

Before I explain the hyper link button, I’ll show you how to link stuff directly, once again it’s easy, linking turns a part of your text blue and if you click it a new window will appear. You can link to  lot’s things like pictures, video’, article’s and websites all you have to do is copy the address and paste it in to reply part, as an example I’ll just link to an article and a single picture. The article is the same as before (DM article about the issa collection) the picture is one of Harry I found on google.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/linkspicandarticle.png
Linking to an article or website is simple just copy/paste the web address.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplylinkit.png
To link to a specific picture click right on the picture a small option list will appear click the third option it should be something like  ‘copy picture location’ (my computer is modified in Dutch so I don’t know the actual term in English) click that and then just paste it into your reply. For some reason my screen shots don’t show right mouse clicks so I can’t show it to you, sorry! sob
You can click on the links in the example window to make sure the link works and show the right thing.

Ok now that you know how to do direct link let’s have a look at that hyperlink button. Now hyperlinking allows you to link and change the name of the link into something you like so instead of ‘http// ‘ one word in your text will become a link. Now in my example I use the word harry and turn it into a link that shows a picture of him. So first I mark the word (in this case harry) and click the hyperlink button, code will appear around it and if you push preview the word harry turned blue, you can click the link but nothing will happen because it doesn’t have anything to link to yet. Now the next step is to put an = between the first url and the ] sign, like this: and then you copy/paste the link to the actual picture after the =and before the ] ,I know it looks odd but as you can see in the preview harry is still just blue but this time if you click on it a picture of him will appear! Cool huh! Cool
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/postreplyhyperlink-1.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/hyperlinklinkmark.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/hyperlinkpreview.png
Once again to test these tools go and have some fun in our testkitchen.
That’s it for now I’ll add more chapters later Hi

Chapter four: edit your post
Al right so now that you know how to post I’ll tell you how to change it. How often does it not happen that just after you clicked ‘post’ you realise: shoot, I forgot to say something important! hiss
Relax, it can be fixed. easter-wink Please don’t use double posting to add stuff you forgot! In other word don’t reply to your own post.
When you go to your post on the board, you’ll see a few symbols above it on the right hand side, a regular user has a quote and two edit buttons.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/modifyandquote.png
Okay now click the big edit button and voila you’re back in the reply window! Add or change what you forgot and click save.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/modifyandsave.png
Your post is going to have a little text underneath that says something like ‘last edited by….and the date of edit’.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/modifiedpost.png
The little one is a light version edit button which mean you can change only text but no smiley etc.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/modifylight.png
Now a regular user can only change his own post, and you have to be fast after seven minutes it’s over, no more changes possible.

The other button is the quote button if you click that you quote the whole post it’s a bit like the’ insert quote’ button for older posts, because once inside the reply window you can only find a limited amount of previous posts underneath the text frame when you scroll down (usually about a dozen posts or so) so if you want to quote some older post (like something said two pages ago) use this button to quote the post.

Another thing you’ll find on the right hand is the report link. As the name says this is the link you use if you wish to alert a mod of a specific  post, if you click that a window opens and you have to type a reason as to why you wish to report that post. And click submit.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/reportlink.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/reportreason.png
Oh and between you and me that better be a good reason! sauer Don’t report posts because they have typo’s! X-Mas_rolleyes
Only use this one if you find the post offensive, racist, trolling (a rude post just to be rude is a ‘trol’ post, yes unfortunately there are ppl who have so much time on their hands they come to a forum just to be rude!) or if you think it’s a spam post.
I’ll tell you why, the other mod’s and I get an automatic alert mail for every time someone reports a post. So please don’t spam my mailbox with these mails for the fun of it!  TCP baking cookies
And just like that another chapter in the manual is done!  tehe

Chapter five: start new topic, add a poll
Ok next on the list new topic’s and poll’s. You found a new article or want to discuss something that hasn’t been discussed yet? Great, thumbsup just start a new topic on it!
How? Go to the main board, you believe your topic should be in. (I used the introduction board)
On the upper right hand side you’ll find some buttons, click new topic, a window like the reply one will appear, with some small differences: you have to fill-in a title and you can change the icon of your topic. The text part stays the same. Type your title and your topic or use a link for a new article and click post.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/newtopicbutton.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/newtopictextwindow.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/newtopicmainboardlist.png

Now before you add a new topic to the list make sure that it isn’t already discussed somewhere else!
Otherwise us mod’s will have to merge the two topic’s together and that’s  unnecessary work for us so…look around before you add a new topic! Angry

To add a poll to your topic just click the button in the main board (again it’s on the right hand side next to the 'new topic' button) a window will appear in which you can fill in the specifics of your poll, amount of possible answers, how long it will run and when you want to show the results of course you can also add a little comment underneath. Click post et voila! You added a poll to the forum!
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/pollpage.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/pollpageonboard.png
Now of course you still have to answer your own question just click the poll and submit your vote. Your own vote is marked in bold and as you can see I left you the option to change your mind.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/submitvote.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/resultofmyvote.png
See how easy this stuff is if someone shows you what to do!

Okay last chapter for today I'm getting sleepy!  tired
Chapter six: Pimp your profile
Now I’ll explain how you can ‘pimp’ your profile with an avatar and a signature banner (what we call ‘siggi’) first you have to get into your profile( I’ll start from the main index) there’s a row of buttons underneath the main forum banner, click the profile button.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/gotoprofile.png
a window appears that shows you an overview of your profile, on the left hand side there’s a list with options,
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/pimpyourprofilesummary.png
click ‘forum profile information’ now are in the personal info menu, in here you can choose an avatar either from us or you can add your own picture.
Note that an avatar can’t be bigger than 200x180 pixel and less then 60kb!
Other than that there’s a range of things you can add to your profile like you birthday, location and gender and you can link to other social sites like msn.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/pimpyourprofile.png

Underneath all those options you’ll see a larger open text field, that’s the signature field in which you can add text or link to a banner.
We have quite a lot of pretty banner that you can choose from. (They are all over the boards most of them have an avatar and banner section) if you find a banner you like copy/paste the link into the siggi field.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/pimpyourprofilesiggy.png
Make sure that the image code is in front and behind the link like this: [ img ]your banner link[ /img ] otherwise your siggi will be a link to the banner but not show the actual banner.
If you wish to centre you banner put the centre code before and after the image link like this [ center ][ img ]your banner link[ /img ][ /center ]
you can even make the banner move!  Use [ move ][ img ]your banner link[ /img ][  /move ]
when typing code don’t use spaces or it won’t work!
Note that banners should be no larger than 200x900 pixel and less then 100kb!
When you're done just click 'change profile' and that's it.
Oh and before I forget none of this pimping is mandatory, you don't have to get a banner and an avatar!
For me personally it's just easier to put a face to the name so to speak, it makes you recognisable as a poster. (that's why I as a mod don't change my avatar or siggi every month, it would just confuse ppl! tehe)

Chapter seven: how to hide from lurkers
Okay so in this chapter I’m going to show you how you can hide your e-mail address and become hidden yourself.
Why? Well let’s just say that in the past there have been troubles because we showed pictures that certain people chough-Middletons-chough are a bit embarrassed about and would rather see gone from the internet.  hall-whistle
Plus we noticed that our forum is watched by more than just royal gossip lovers. shifty And if you have a sharp tongue well…we wouldn’t want you to get in trouble. TCP baking cookies
Trust me it happened before! Just ask mousie or TCP if you don’t believe me!
Ok so let’s get to it! First of all go to your profile then click ‘account related settings’ in the option list on the left hand (it's the first one). Underneath your e-mail are two questions ‘hide e-mail from public’ and ‘show others your online status’ . The standard setting is to show both e-mail and status.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/standardaccountrelatedsetting.png
Now if you click the V on next to the email and click the V out next to the status both your e-mail and you are hidden from public view
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/hide.png
Which means you show up as a hidden member in the on line list down at the bottom of the main index page.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/whosonline.png
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i462/akasha2411/screenshots/whosonlinehidden.png
And if people search for your profile in the member list your always off line even when you’re posting.
After you done that don’t forget to re-enter you password twice before clicking ‘change profile’.
Oh and don’t think that becoming hidden from general view will save you if you go against the forum rules! The mod’s are still able to see you and your address! Cool
