Prince Rainier was disappointed that part of the major nations had refused to send a significant dignitary to his and Grace's wedding. Invitations had been sent to Buckingham Palace, Winston Churchill, President Eisenhower, and President de Gaulle.

I read on this forum that HM had no time for Princess Grace as she thought she was movie star and not royalty material. Or words to that effect.

It was reported in the DM.

Don’t know how true it was though.

It seems a lot of other monarchs and royal houses felt the same way about Rainier marrying a film star, not just Queen Elizabeth. Every Royal in Europe declined to attend Rainier and Grace's wedding. The only royals who did turn up were the Aga Khan and King Farouk of Egypt.

In those days it was felt that ruling royals married royals. The Grimaldis hadn't done so in the past, and as a result there were very few family links to any of the other European dynasties that would encourage attendance. I have read that Elizabeth didn't want to go to the wedding but Philip did. In the end they didn't go but sent a silver tray as a gift.

Things eventually thawed, though. The Spanish royals (exiled then) became friends of Rainier and Grace. Grace went to Princess Anne's wedding.

I understand that Ray Milland was given an ultimatum by his wife and he dropped Grace Kelly.
