Palace basement frees up space for Kate's baby No.3

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will have more space in Kensington Palace when their third child arrives next spring.

Kensington and Chelsea council has officially given the green light to controversial plans to ‘free up the palace suites for the Royal Family’ by relocating staff offices into a two-storey basement behind the Orangery restaurant in the palace grounds.

There were 19 objections to the £24 million extension, because two-storey ‘iceberg’ basements are usually banned in the borough.

Locals called the proposals ‘shoddy’ and accused planners of being ‘bedazzled by courtiers’. But the council made an ‘exception’ for Kensington Palace, and approved its plans on Thursday.

The extension will be funded by the charity Historic Royal Palaces, which submitted the plans in March.

A spokesman said: ‘It is important we plan ahead and consider long-term accommodation needs at the palace.’

So it's "Kate's baby No.3"? Not "the Cambs baby No.3" or "Kate and Will's baby No.3"? Single mother here?

I do believe that all they have to do is put the two toddlers in the same room with different beds and then put the infant in a cradle in the room next door. It's not like they need a new basement and it's not like they need more space. The more this gets out, the worse it'll get for the couple. I'm reminded of how Marie Antoinette bought the palace of St. Cloud for the kids, but it's not like she really needed the space.

It's not even the main article, ti's just quietly inserted in. I do believe that the comments would be raging if this were the main article and focus.

I notice that the article didn't say that William and Kate's apartment is being enlarged.

That doesn't surprise me - because from earlier reports on this story that isn't going to be happening. In other words this change has nothing to do with William and Kate.

Harry will need a larger apartment than Nott Cott when he marries and it is also possible that either Eugenie and/or Beatrice may be taking apartments in KP. It is for these royals that more room would be needed - Harry most likely as he is the one who will need to be housed in a secure building.

These plans were announced months ago long before a third child was on the horizon but the DM knows that people will read articles about William and Kate and so they put them out there as click-bait.

No, it doesn't relate directly to Cambs 3, though it has to do with the Cambs offspring and H and his possible offspring and the Yorks and their possible offspring.. As it's said in the article, this is done with keeping in mind basically the next decades ["A spokesman said: ‘It is important we plan ahead and consider long-term accommodation needs at the palace.’ "], so charities, societies and staff have to move out (into the basement) and the Windsors will be placed instead in the apartments.

Many outrageous things are placed like this. When there's a Shakespeare article and the first story is sth no one cares about, it's still worth clicking, because the really juicy/ newsworthy things are buried below. This isn't the first time sth unsavoury about the Winds/ someone else is published, but buried.

However when this plan was first announced it was the headline news. Putting it lower in one of those multi-story articles now is because the author knows that it isn't news and so they had to pad their article with a minor update - that the Royal Palaces Trust got the approval, which we were told when the proposal was first put, they would get anyway and so it isn't news now but was months ago when it was the headlines of the paper.

I pity the people working there. I have done it and it's awful without natural light.

I think they are doing it because they need more space for staff. If Charles is not leaving CH they will need to use space at KP and as lazy as they are they will not use space at BP.

The bit that's juicy about this news is that they have council approval to do the work. So far it was a submission and a desired plan, now it's got the green light and it highlights that there are rules for them and rules for us/ normal people, because this should not have been approved, as mega basements are forbidden in Ken. It remains a scandalous issue.

And as ridiculous as W&K moving their sodding tennis court and annexing some neighbour's land in the process, because the "old" placing of the tennis court spoilt their precious view.

Gosh I hope this system crumbles to dust, soon. Then W&K can live off the millions they have stashed away and stop pestering people.

I don't think it will go quite like that. With the dissolution of the monarchy, you NEVER know how things will go.

Kate won't stay with him, she would leave him immediately; she didn't want to be just a rich man's wife, she wants to be Princess of Wales and then Queen.
