Most Swedes would like King Carl XVI Gustaf to hand over the throne to Crown Princess Victoria in the next decade, a poll showed today after new reports of his womanising and shady connections.
A full 59 percent of Swedes want the king to step down within the next 10 years, while only 29 percent think he should reign until his death, according to a Demoskop poll published in the Expressen daily.

The Internet poll conducted Friday of 620 people also showed that while 73 percent of those questioned said they had much or very much confidence in Victoria, only 39 percent said the same thing about her father.

Thirty-two percent of people polled said they had little or very little confidence in the king, compared to just nine percent for the crown princess.

The king reached the official retirement age of 65 last month but has said he has no plans to abdicate in favour of his 33-year-old daughter.

Victoria should have first her own family and have some years with them, before being Queen. CG is a selfish and an immature idiot  hiss

It would actually be a good idea for the Heir and Sovereign to reign jointly and do joint duties if the reign stretches to a long one. It gives the Heir something to do and also unloads the workload for the monarch.

From wedding bliss to royal crisis: the state of Sweden's monarchy

One year after the royal wedding of Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria, the Royal Family finds itself mired in crisis following reports bad behaviour by King Carl XVI Gustaf. The Local's Clara Guibourg examines why the wedding glow faded so fast and what it means for the monarchy's future.

•King Carl XVI Gustaf: the complete interview (1 Jun 11)
•The King's turbulent year: a timeline (31 May 11)
•Scandal-hit king sees popularity plunge (28 May 11)

About a year ago, June 19th, 2010, was a picture perfect day in Stockholm. At the time, royal well-wishers flooded into to Stockholm in droves, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newly married Crown Princess Victoria and her former personal trainer-turned-prince beau, Daniel Westling.

The city of Stockholm arranged "Love Stockholm 2010", a two-week festival in celebration of the Crown Princess and her husband, and support for the monarchy reached a whopping 74 percent.

Simply put, enthusiasm for Sweden's royal family was hitting new heights as the country's first royal wedding in more than 30 years swayed many to conclude that, heck, maybe having a monarchy isn't so bad after all.

But fast-forward the tape a little, and one finds that last year's wedding fairy tale has given way to scandal, scorn, and a healthy dose of royal scepticism.

Today, figures show that the monarchy is backed by no more than 66 percent of the populace, and the rosy glow surrounding the institution after the royal wedding has faded fast, in a turbulent year that has had the King facing a deluge of negative publicity.

Jerk; first of all, to ruin the glow of her wedding and honeymoon and romance with such a scummy scandal and he is ridiculously selfish. These royal men are becoming disgusting and frankly put I am fed up with seeing royal families behaving in such degrading ways. Selfish monster to do this to his daughter, putting everything she's been trained to be at risk.
