Was he complicit?  Probably.

Does this mean Maxima is tainted? No.

No time is wasted. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit all 12 provinces of the Netherlands in little less than a month. In November they will travel to the Dutch Caribbean islands too, it was announced on Friday.

'Joyous entries' are an ancient tradition, dating back to the Middle Ages when new sovereign presented themselves to the main sites and regions of their Kingdom to renew the pledges and links between them. Nowadays it is still maintained in the European monarchies - in a different form.

It was Willem-Alexander's ancestor who invaded England and installed himself as William III. Despite that shared history, the Dutch monarchy is much less in the public eye than its British counterpart.

The Dutch monarchy "doesn't have the pomp that the British monarchy can trot out," said James Kennedy, a historian at the University of Amsterdam who has advised Willem-Alexander.

Dutch monarchs do not have coronations because, in the absence of a state church, there is nobody to place the crown on the king or queen's head. Instead, the crown rests unworn beside the monarch throughout the investiture.

Even the relatively low-key nature of that ceremony has its critics these days, however. Sixteen lawmakers say they will either not attend the gathering of lawmakers in the New Church, where Willem-Alexander will swear to uphold the constitution, or they will refuse to swear an oath back to their new monarch.

As the Netherlands grapples with recession and implements budget cuts, some would also like to see the monarch be paid less and pay taxes.

"She (Beatrix) is very rich, she earns a lot of money, she doesn't pay taxes. She's laughing at us while we pay," said Hans Maessen, leader of a republican campaign to cut the head of state's pay. Forbes in 2011 estimated the net worth of Beatrix and her family at $220 million.

A petition calling for Willem-Alexander's salary to be cut to 150,000 euros, down from his mother's 850,000 euros, has collected more than 19,000 signatures.

Willem-Alexander said he was happy to be paid less or pay tax, but warned that cuts would result in job cuts in his staff.

I think the BRF should pay attention to what is going on with the other Monarchies.

They do, remember the PR advice from Cameron to the spanish PM. However, they live in fantasy land not even the annus horribilis has made them land in real life.

thankyou I like Max because she seems to be the most prepared for her job and it's very obvious that the queen considers her an asset-

Yes Alexandrine, not to mention tri-lingual!!! Spanish,English and Dutch!! Wow talk about a woman can go in any political arena and make her ideas come through. She is very conscientious of her efforts and and role as a true monarch. Good for her...finally a true woman of substance and intelligence!!

Times like this I understand the value of any future princesses being required to end up answering to the Dutch parliament. Anyone like Kate wouldn't have made it and I am astounded at how amazingly linguistic she is.

Willem-Alexander and Maxima solemn for first official engagement as King and Queen

King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima's beaming smiles and brightly-coloured outfits were nowhere to be seen at their first official engagement as the new monarchs of the Netherlands on Saturday.

Willem-Alexander, 46, and Maxima, his Queen consort, were in Amsterdam over the weekend to attend a memorial for Dutch soldiers lost during World War II alongside Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Maxima's eye-catching wardrobe, seen by the world during the national celebrations, was replaced with an all-black ensemble for the somber occasion, including coat, gloves, hat, clutch and shoes.

Not sure about the sleeves but the colour really suits Queen Maxima. Kate should wear more trouser suits especially when it is windy.

The guy in the greyish suit holding the umbrella in the background is the governor of South-Holland, Jan Franssen. Franssen is gay himself so I think the presence of the Queen was special for him in more than one way.
