"It's a tough position," says Robert Finch, Dominion chairman of the Monarchist League of Canada. "You are always in the spotlight, always on display."

Regine Salens, who runs a popular Belgium-based royal website, Noblesse & Royautes (www.noblesseetroyautes.com/nr01/), says that if she had to put together a course on how to be a consort, it would include lessons on how to live within the constraints of the public eye, language training, public speaking and how to develop knowledge about a wide and diverse range of topics.

Finch says the top requirement for any consort is loyalty — not so much loyalty as in marital fidelity, but loyalty to their spouse no matter what.

A good consort, says Finch, is also someone who is able to complement his or her spouse.

But it's a fine line to walk; the consort must not outshine the royal.

"You don't want to be seen as hogging the spotlight or undermining the King or Queen," he says. "You have to be supportive and part of a team, not in competition."

Salens agrees: Middleton, she says, "will have to take care not to overshadow her husband. The media will probably be more interested in her outings and her clothes than in Prince William's speeches. Being able to avoid grabbing all the attention when the spotlight is on you is a subtle art, but she seems well on her way to managing it."

The consort is more defined by what he or she is not supposed to do than by what he or she can do," says Elisabeth Cawthon, an associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Arlington, a British history expert and an avid royal watcher.

She adds there is no constitutionally defined role for a consort.

WK already overshadows her future hubby wtf easter-James any time PW did an engagement before they made their royal wedding engagement that's all WK did was made sure she did something that would turn the spotlight back on her and off PW  screaming JMO

I agree. That's where the trouble is going to start. Kate totally loves the spotlight.
