Oh, the joy of being the spare not the heir
How else can you explain the Queen’s defiance in presenting Andrew with the gold-embroidered insignia of a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order last week to mark her gratitude for his service to the Crown? After all, he’s plain ‘Randy Andy’ or ‘Airmiles Andy’ to you and me.

Apparently, the Queen keeps a framed photograph of her second son on her desk — and I dare say she’s been looking at it more fondly than ever as Andrew has taken the flak for cosying up to a convicted American sex offender, accepting money from dubious businessmen to bale out his high-spending ex-wife, and blurring the lines between his role as Britain’s trade ambassador and his position as fourth in line to the throne.

Call Her Majesty unwise, if you wish. But no one should be surprised that her maternal instincts have kicked in with such force.

Andrew is her second son and second sons can get away with things that first sons can’t.

They — or we, I should say — can be reckless, naive and even downright irresponsible without ever having to skimp on the unconditional devotion of our mothers.
