They should have sent someone senior, like Harry or Beatrice or SOMEONE who would have been there to show respect. An Empress of Japan can show up, but not a Windsor? Since Beatrice is SO EAGER to make a role for herself, why not send her?

I don't think, protocol-wise, Beatrice or even Harry would have been regarded as senior enough. There was nothing preventing Andrew going, though, or Camilla, or even Edward.

There's renewed speculation thanks to this, about there being some kind of bad blood between the Belgian royal family and the Brits, who, although descended from the same royal house, aren't particularly close. I just think that if Margrethe of Denmark, Carl Gustav of Sweden and the Empress of Japan, who aren't related at all to the Belgian RF, can turn up it's pretty poor of the BRF not to send someone.

Nothing would surprise me that the Continentals are sick of HM's snottiness and tired of the BRF in general. Either way, someone should have been sent.

^^Roselia, King Baudouin was definitely related to both the Swedish and Danish RF's. His mother was Princess Astrid of Sweden whose mother was Princess Ingeborg of Denmark.

But that doesn't change the fact that the no-show of the BRF is a testament of their arrogance towards the continental royals. And the rumor that some politicians adviced against going to Brussels, as it is also the capital of the much-hated EU, is too ridiculous for words. If Elizabeth let that influence her decision not to send anyone of her family, she isn't worth her pay.

They are more recently related to the swedes/norwegian royal families than to the UK.

But as Countess says it doesn't make it any better that no one came. I was really surprised because QE and PP did go to the funeral of Baudouin. If there was bad blood it was between the 1994 and now??

I think the attendance at the funeral of Baudouin wasn't all to their liking either but it was in August and the Queen was in Scotland for her vacation so she had no engagements she could use as an excuse for a no-show. But in the end, her presence was only confirmed the day before the funeral.
And it was only done because the Emperor and Emperess of Japan would be present, as would other royals from all over the world. And I think it also played a role that King Baudouin was King before Elizabeth was Queen and was thus ranking higher than Elizabeth in terms of duration of office. This is probably also the reason why Elizabeth attended the Silver Wedding Anniversary of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in the Netherlands in 1962. Queen Juliana became Queen in 1948, four years before Elizabeth, and also outranked her British colleague (until she abdicated in 1980). It is about the only royal event Elizabeth has attended on the continent.

BTW Some nutcase at BP made a massive mistake with the uniform and foreign orders of the DoE. Philip was in military uniform and wore the Order of the Leopard but he should have worn the Order of the Leopold, which is the highest Belgian Order. The mistake to wear the Leopard was even more painful because it was the order of Zaire, a former colony of Belgium, and the president of Zaire (now the Congo), Mobuto, was about the only Head of State who was not invited to the funeral because of hsi abysmal record regarding human rights in Zaire.
It is another proof of the ongoing amateur hour at BP.

Thing is, the BRF need to stop abdicating responsibility for their lives and start being more proactive. Too late right now, but thing is, it's inexcusable. People with their resources have no business being so stupid and have no business not knowing things.

How stupid; as if HM is to unfit to make her own statement.

Something has gone down; maybe the rest of the world's royals are snubbing them. Maybe they don't want Countess Sophie showing up in her usual tack outfits.

The British Royal Family had had a very cold relation with the Belgian Royal Family since 1952, when King Baudouin, against the wish of his people and the British wishes, refused to break protocol and attend the funeral of King George VI in London and Windsor. Belgian protocol had it that the King could only attend a funeral in a foreign country if he had already visited that country in state. Since the King was only reigning since July 1951 and he had not yet visited the United Kingdom he thus refused the invitation to attend the funeral and sent his brother the Prince of Liège instead. This froze the very good relation which had existed between the British and the Belgian sovereigns and this was confirmed when in the summer of 1959 the British Royal Family refused the invitation to attend the wedding of the Prince of Liège and Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria. In return, and as most European royal families did, the Belgian Court sent no representative to the wedding of Princess Margaret and the photographer Mr. Anthony Armstrong Jones, seen by the European royalty as a too unequal wedding and thus unworthy of their attendance.

However, HM Queen Elizabeth II did send representation to the royal wedding of King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola. Nevertheless, it might be understood as a little revenge from the British Court, since the Queen sent precisely Princess Margaret and Mr. Armstrong Jones in their first foreign representation, instead of sending her husband or other member of the Royal Family. Certainly the guest who got most attention in Brussels, Princess Margaret was received by the Prince and Princess of Liège and dazzled everyone in the galas before the wedding and in the wedding itself.

this will probably explain why QoE did not bother going to the funeral. the rest of the royal families had sent their most senior royals.

that is so ridiculous - holding grudges over ancient protocols - if that is the reason.  If there was a feud you do not show any class by continuing the feud - end it and show some class.

it would be even worse if the reason is the EU issue.

How petty - especially since RF's are an endangered species - they should all band together in times like these.

Very very tacky on the part of the BRF and foreign office.  Sometimes they come off as such a bunch of patronizing condescending twits.

HM has just made it clear that the BRF is worthless; HM and Co. are supposed to do the representation of the government at times like these, not the ambassador. The ambassador has enough responsibilities and duties, especially in these trying times and shouldn't have to do this.
