Title: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Mia on January 30, 2011, 05:01:07 pm
Crown Prince Felipe of Spain turns 43 today. It's a special birthday celebration because it's also the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ceremony where he swore allegiance to the Constitution and to the King, fully accepting his institutional role as successor to the Crown.

Here is a video of the occasion (in Spanish):

Prince Felipe turns 18 and swore allegiance to the constituition (http://www.rtve.es/mediateca/videos/20110126/principe-felipe-jura-constitucion-1986/998015.shtml)

Congrats  :flower:

He is SO dashing. How on earth can Letizia ever be unhappy with him around?

Look at those pic's!
Rania and Leti go for the twin look! :-

So when Princess Letizia of Spain met with Queen Rania of Jordan, neither looked particularly thrilled to be sharing the limelight.
The pair looked almost identical however on Letizia's State visit to the Middle East and onlookers were hard-pressed to pick a favourite.

The difference is that Rania is the queen of the poorest arab state (they dont have any oil) and spends about 1% of the national buget on her wardrobe, and still looks like a rake in a floppy dress; while Letizia dresses in relatively normal clothes paid for by her husband's allowance. Rania should be ashamed to flaunt such riches coming from a country where 1 million Palesinans are still forced to live in refugee camps after 60 years.

So true!!! Rania spent thousand of € in closes letizia, often spent closes that are 60 or 90€ not that much, and always support their country... but Rania...  :KEZZA:

I just saw this too and did not know where to post it. Then I found it here !

IMO, Rainia's FACE looks OLD but I love her suit. Her lips are way too plumped up too.

Letizia's hair looks crimped or wavy. Not a good style and way too skinny.

These 2 do look like attention-seekers (especially Rania !) , IMO. Maybe they are afraid that Kate will start stealing their thunder. They should get on their knees and thank God it is NOT someone better like Isabella Calthorpe.

BUT who knows ? I am sure Kate will be in the news more than Letizia and Rania. Most likely.

Kate never will be dressed better than these two...  her fashion sense is bellow the red line!!! Rania most time dresses very well, and anyone can shine more than her... letizia is too skiny.. yes she is.. but it a beautifull woman.. and dresses better than waity katie with closes not so expensive like hers...

Rania seems that she had some botox in her lips  :-
Rania looks strange... something with her lips are wrong and that outfith makes her look like she was at her 50's

Spain's Princess Letizia, the wife of Crown Prince Felipe, on Monday showed her support for the collaboration agreement reached between the Spanish and Portuguese federations that deal with rare diseases and seek to improve quality of life for those who suffer such illnesses in Ibero-America.

At the Zarzuela Palace, the residence of the royal family outside Madrid, the princess received representatives of both federations, FEDER and FEDRA, who told her about the cooperation agreement they had signed.

Princess Letizia also expressed her support, during two other audiences, for the work of the Spanish Association for Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, or SWH, which is a member of FEDER, as well as the projects of the Carmen Pardo-Valcarce Foundation, which promote people with mental debilities being integrated into the work force.

The princess, an active supporter of FEDER, follows with interest the initiatives of that organization and of its Portuguese counterpart, focused on improving quality of life for patients and their families

The Duchess of Cambridge better watch out, there's a new royal poised to steal her style crown.

She may have only come to our attention a few short weeks ago, but Princess Letizia has already carved out a name for herself as a royal style icon, showcasing some serious fashion credentials on every single one of her royal engagements.

The 41-year-old mother-of-two's wardrobe of tailored sheath dresses, sky-scraping court shoes and eye-catching jewels is much more daring than the play-it-safe style of the former Kate Middleton.

Her choice of outfit at today's inauguration of the exhibition 'El Ultimo Viaje de la Fragata Mercedes' (The Last Voyage of the Frigate Mercedes) at the National Archaeological museum in Madrid was case in point.

The glamorous former newsreader may have worn a conservative suit but she still showcased her style credentials with a hint of snakeskin.

Post by: Countess of Holland on June 23, 2014, 08:39:06 am
On Saturday, the new King and Queen of Spain met with victims of terrorism. The King already paid attention to the victims of terrorism in his speech after he took the oath at the Cortes on Thursday. And now his first act as King, besides the regular things like meeting the PM, is to meet victims of terrorism and their families.

She is indeed very, very thin. She was never curved or anything, so being slim/ thin is part of her bone-structure, but those shoulders...yikes.

I guess this is also why she wears pant-suits so often, to keep her very thin legs hidden. Still she looks healthy, her skin is not greyish like Kate and she also uses less make-up than Kate (or it is better applied ).

I agree cate and yooper....not healthy and really to skinny....I was really sick a few years ago and looked exactly like that and it's not healthy at all....it's a health scare for sure...my reason was because for 30 years I had no idea i was allergic to Soy and wheat.....this woman needs to focus on taking better care of her body if she thinks that beautifuls or attractive then IMO she needs her head examined...as an ex boyfriend once told me...that look is a look of a bag of bones

I could loose 10-15 kilo's easily (thanks to my hernia I have forgotten how the gym looks) and still I can see the veins in my hands and upper arms. With some people, especially the pale ones, veins will always be more visible. And Letizia is pale and I think she doesn't tan easily but needs to take care she doesn't get sunburned.

BTW A nice story I was once told..do you know where the term 'blue blood' for nobles comes from? It is because in the old days women of noble blood didn't get out much so they looked pale and you could see the veins in their arms, neck etc. And these veins looked blue-ish. Women who worked on the land didn't have that problem because they had a tan.

I've noticed a tiny bit of fuzz on the top of Letizia's head at the crown on recent photos. There's also been a little thinning, maybe due to stress. Perhaps she's had her hair cut to strengthen it.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Countess of Holland on June 27, 2014, 02:12:05 pm
I don't know for sure but I think Letizia has the same hair that I do: very thin, very straight and therefor difficult to put in a model and keep it there. And short hairs, like the ones at the hairline, tend to be a bit fuzzy indeed.

And I don't think she has cut her hair. I think she 'tugged' it away, kind of an inwards roll. I have done that myself but it is quite some work if you have to do it yourself. But perhaps she has some help in that department now that she is Queen?

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: kolkomilko on June 27, 2014, 02:34:01 pm
Whether she has cut her hair or not, next time we shall see. But one thing is sure: she decided to have a new look, a new style, because it propers to her  (new) position. It is not disputable.

True, a new position and a new hairdo and total outlook. Not very different from Maxima whose hair was rather 'messy' as times and since she is a Queen, she has her hair 'up' or in a cignon much more often. And I am glad for that. Maxima's hair is badly damaged after all those years of bleeching it and it showed.

Why 'false'? And has she ever given you the idea that she actually had cut her hair? False has such a negative sound, like she has tried to betray you, me, the public and I don't think she did.

She even looks chic in a cardigan! Spain's Queen Letizia walks hand in hand with King Felipe at design and innovation awards in Spain

She is fast becoming the world's favourite style icon (sorry, Duchess of Cambridge), and today Queen Letizia of Spain proved that she can even make a cardigan look high fashion.

The Spanish monarch looked chic and stylish on a visit to the Spanish Design and Innovation Awards in Valladolid with her husband, King Felipe VI of Spain.

Wearing an on-trend burnt orange cardigan and Aztec print skirt, the 41-year-old looked both stylish and regal.

Thanks and I love the colour of that cardigan!

One of the commenters said something about the absence of the wedding ring and that reminded me of something a solleague said to me a few days ago.
She got married a few weeks ago, went on a honeymoon and last week returned to work. While drinking coffee in the hallway one of my male colleagues jokingly inquired if the marriage was 'bust' already since she didn't wear a wedding ring.
She said that since she is very thin (and eats a great deal...I see what she is having for lunch every workday!) the wedding band sometimes hurst, especially when people squeeze her hand a little too hard when extending handshakes since there is litlle flesh around her fingers to absorb the pressure so to speak.

Now I am not sure if this is the same for everyone who is this thin but it could be a reason why Letizia isn't wearing her wedding ring either. She has a lot of handshaking to do when on royal duty after all.

A right royal style icon! Queen Letizia is glamorous in silver as she meets the Portuguese First Lady in Lisbon

She's less than two weeks into her reign but Spain's Queen Letizia was every inch the royal style icon as she was welcomed by Portuguese First Lady Maria Cavaco Silva in Lisbon today.

Fresh from a successful trip to meet the Pope at the Vatican, Letizia was immaculate in a silver-grey sheath dress and tailored jacket, accessorised with a chic snakeskin clutch.

Letizia and her husband, the new King Felipe VI of Spain, are on a state visit to Portugal, the first of a series that also includes trips to France and Morocco.

And no flashing of the host for Letizia...a proper choice to wear a pencil skirt.

And unlike Waity who gave her muslim hosts in Malaysia a full view on her cleavage, Letizia keeps it very modest with that stunning gown (or is it a long skirt with a simply white blouse?). Either way, a proper choice. Now if she would only eat a little more...

A dressed-down King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia enjoy a rare night off royal duties with a trip to the movies
In their three-week reign, Queen Letizia and King Felipe have had a packed schedule of official engagements.
So a rare night off royal duty must be welcomed by the pair, who also parents two daughters, Leonor, eight, and Sofia, seven.
Taking advantage of their freedom, Letizia and Felipe were spotted enjoying a low-key evening at a cinema in Madrid.

Letizia goes back to school! Spain's glamorous new queen gives students a lesson in style during a reception in Madrid

It was back to school for Spain's Queen Letizia today as she welcomed students from Madrid's Francisco de Vitoria University to the Zarzuela Palace.

The 41-year-old was glamorous in a neat pink cardigan, floral skirt and a pair of her trademark court shoes - a look that was a far cry from the scruffier get-ups that dominated her student days.

Spain's new queen boasts not one but two degrees: the first in journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and the second a master's course in the same subject from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.

I like the simplicity of these summer outfits she has been sporting and how well she carries them off.  Nice simple blouse with skirt - looks very elegant.  The shoes with the grey ensemble are a bit much for my taste but certainly give the outfit pizzazz

I've noticed especially since she is Queen - Letizia is avoiding looking like she spends zillions of clothes - being sensitive to the public mood.  She wears simple clothes that do not look like they cost a mint - white blouses with skirts has been a staple now for awhile.  She still looks good and elegant but not expensive.  Smart move.

Even before she was Queen, she often wore cardigans and blouses and such, it is just more visible now that she is Queen and the press pays her even more attention. Only on state visits she wears the more expensive clothes.

And indeed...very wise. It would be bad for the image if she wears blouses of 500 EUR when so many people in Spain have to make due with minimum wages or government benefits.

Spain forced to apologise to the King of Morocco after police tried to board his yacht when they mistook him for a drug smuggler

Spain has been forced to make an embarrassing apology to the King of Morocco after police officers mistook the royal for a drug smuggler before attempting to board his yacht.

King Mohammed VI had been enjoying a day sailing in the waters off Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta when a Spanish civil guard patrol boat began speeding towards his entourage.

Officers approached two speed boats and three jetskis belonging to the king's party and demanded to know the identities and destination of those on board

The incensed monarch is said to have shouted: 'Do you know who I am?', Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo reports.

When the officers said they did not -  he removed his cap and sunglasses and was instantly recognised by the sheepish patrol crew.

An infuriated King Mohammed then immediately phoned King Felipe VI of Spain to complain about the incident, the Telegraph reports.

An urgent message was sent from the Royal Household to Spain's interior ministry and Colonel Andres Lopez, the head of the Civil Guard in Ceuta, was immediately dispatched to the Moroccan royal yacht so that he could personally apologise.

I think that now that Letizia is Queen, she has more freedom to do what she wants. It has been said in the Spanish press that as wife of the heir she was 'reigned in' out of fear that she would overshadow Felipe.
Now she is Queen and Felipe is giving her more space because he clearly has trust in her abilities (and his own not to be overshadowed). As a result, she will probably feel better and less stressed out (because of feeling distrusted, not liked etc) so she will gain a few pounds.

And she can definitely use those pounds.

And some extra fat can make wrinkles go away, which is why losing weight always makes you look older, the skin gets more saggy etc.

So in my opinion there were no fillers involved other than some extra paella or other vacation-food (and don't we all add a few pounds when on vacation? I know I do!...all those Italian gelatto's).

Earning her fashion stripes! Queen Letizia keeps it chic in black and white as she lends her support to child safety campaign

She's chaired a charity meeting and hosted the Panamanian president on a state visit already this week but there appears to be no let up in Queen Letizia's busy schedule.

Today, Europe's newest monarch spent the morning with a delegation from internet safety campaigners Alia2 - and managed to look the business while she did it.

Neat in a crisp white shirt and tiered black and white skirt, Letizia was every inch the style icon as she chatted to the campaigners at the Zarzuela Palace.

Queen Letizia turns Simpson! Spanish royal is given a makeover courtesy of cheeky cartoonist who also 'Simpsonised' the Duchess of Cambridge
She's a glamorous mother-of-two, feted for her fashion nous and extensive charity work, but now Spain's Queen Letizia has had a tribute of a very different kind - a Simpsons style makeover.

The Spanish monarch has been transformed into a cartoon character by Italian artist Alexsandro  Palombo, who says the royal has impressed him with her 'strength' and 'determination'.

'Queen Letizia perfectly represents the ideal modern woman,' he added. 'She's strong, determined and committed to supporting important social causes.'

Yeah, because personal fulfillment is the most important part of royalty after all; what she wants is what the entire monarchy should revolve around. How on earth could Letizia possibly be happy having Felipe as a husband, two healthy kids, a title, security in every area, and of course, an entire nation at her feet?

Quote

The whole point of being a Consort is to walk two steps behind and push your husband forward and make him look good.

As long as she doesn't skip out on Spain and think that she has no obligations beyond a 9-5 schedule.

KF, have you ever had in-laws who talked down on you? Because I have and it drained me. And I only saw these in-laws a few times a year, Letizia had to work with them. And when you are constantly criticized of when you are kept small, as in, you are not allowed to use your potentials, it can also drain you.

You Always nag and whine (and with good reason) about Kate not doing anything and in Kate's case I get the feeling that that is how Kate likes it. But Letizia was a career-woman, she had a busy job (and not 9-5 at all, she did the evening-news remember?) and I am sure she wanted to put her abilities and talents to good use for the family of her husband, especially since it is also the future of her daughter(s). But according to many articles in the Spanish press, she essentially had her wings clipped by her in-laws. That is enough to make you feel unhappy, marriages have been dissolved over less.

You always go on and on over professionalism and women needing careers, and I agree with you. But someone who puts such value on that should also realise how important it is to find personal fulfillment in everything you do. A person cannot be happy without that and that will affect everyone around that person, especially loved ones. So yes, personal fulfillment is important, VERY important, also for a royal. The husband of Queen Beatrix had his wings clipped and he ended up being seriously depressed, and all three princes have been on record on how that affected their mother, their family-life and their own lives and personalities. And then there is the Japanese Crown Princess who also had her wings clipped and became seriously depressed. Don't you think that has affected her husband and daughter?

As for the international aspect and 9-5 attitude, that song is getting a bit old. Not only is there no proof that Letizia wants an international position (like Queen Maxima, Queen Mathilde and Crown Princess Mary), she is also spotted often enough performing duties with or without her husband that don't fall into your time-frame. And you always say that consorts need to bring something to the table, a network. And I am sure that Letizia has, but the 'problem' with a network is that it needs to be maintained and enlarged for it to remain relevant and usefull. And an international role will help with maintaining and expanding the network which will also benefit Felipe and Spain.

Furthermore, you feel that Crown Princess Victoria should have the right to enjoy the childhood of her daughter and work less and be a family, but you don't allow Letizia that time with her daughters? Helping them with their home-work, having dinner with them etc. It seems you have two sets of rules; one for the born-royals ad one for the ones that married in. I find that very unfair. I think that royal life is hard for all, but for the married-ins it is even harder because they all of a sudden had to adapt to that kind of life while Victoria was eased in so to speak from a young age, like Estelle is now.

I have had FAMILY talk down on me.

I know what it's like to go through a lot of disapproval and second, I am hypocritical. I am more lenient with born royals.

Third, this can be considered a personal attack, a major no-no in this forum.

Kuei didn't invent the 9-5 story. It has come up in the press since a long time ago. Though it more or less exploded last year in september. The main theory at that time is that the marriage was completely broken and they had arrived at an agreement.

Since the start there were comments that she didn't consider being a royal as a lifestyle but as a job as if she was a diplomatic or something like that. So she works until 5 and then she can do whatever she wants.

There are times when she does work on weekend but there is a trend if you observe the events and if is something not very important she doesn't go. Felipe is attending lot of sports events or more private visits alone. Meanwhile she is on a hipster concert in Madrid.

Now do you have to believe this because it is on the press? Of course not. But Kuei didn't invent the 9-5 workhours story. Maybe the ex director of El Mundo did. But not our mod  :tehe:

For ex most journos did say that they didn't attend Madeleine wedding because it was on a saturday and no way was she going to work that day. They said it more elegantly but the message was that one.

For the Leti fans. I've read today that she has three international trips: Lisboa, Viena and somewhere in Italy to attend a conference of the FAO (not sure the name in english, the UN organism for food)

It is also possible that Letizia didn't attend the wedding of Madeleine because she wasn't invited. It was, compared to the wedding of Victoria, a rather low-profile wedding. Not even all Scandinavian royals were present.
And the Dutch King and Queen weren't present either, and neither was any other member of the Dutch RF. Despite the fact that the links between both families are pretty close; the Swedish King was a godson of Queen Juliana, Queen/ Princess Beatrix is a godmother of Victoria and the list continues.

Considering the age difference, Madeleine is 14 years younger than Felipe, it makes perfect sense that they weren't even invited.

As for the 9-5, it may not be KF's invention, but she mentions it time and time again and all without proof that Letizia is that kind of person. At the end of their vacation this year, the couple hosted an event for some 300 people from the local community. It was on a Saturday and started around 5. And there will be many more events that will be outside the workweek, 9-5 range. Some of her work will be out in the open, some will be more private; preperations, meetings with staff-people to discuss planning etc.

And I am sure that on these foreign trips she will not lock herself up in her hotelroom from 5 pm until 9 am either.

As for the different rules for royals and non-royals, that riles me up. We all talk here that Kate shouldn't feel 'above' us because we are all equals. And we are. Some are just in a different position.
I try to judge people on face value. And obviously how I judge them and perceive them is personal and coloured by who I am and how my experiences in life are. I don't dislike the women who have married the heirs to the throne, I wish them all happiness and I judge them on their past life and present activities and characters as I see it through the press.

In this respect, the only two I have a real problem with are Mette Marit and Kate. MM because she has made a mess of her life and obviously wanted a sugar daddy to get her out of trouble and Haakon was a f00l to do so. And since her wedding she hasn't exactly cleaned up her act; she gives Kate a run for her money when it comes to laziness and like Kate, MM loves to mingle with the Hollywood crowd.
And Kate...well, all has been said about that.

And I am not a fan of Victoria either, a born royal. She has been given all chances in life and she did nothing with them. She was allowed to go to Yale (but not based on her grades) and her parents were able to afford it. But she didn't make an effort at all to get a degree and after two years she left Yale without anything. And although I don't doubt Daniel to be a hardworking man, devoted father and husband, he still gives me all the bad vibes for some reason.

^ I agree - I do not see this distinction between royals and those who are not royal ( I have decided to never use that insulting term "commoner" again).  And on all the royal forums there is a distinct tendency to go after females and females who are not "royal" more so than royal males.

With some exceptions all of the so called royals are less than impressive - as for Letizia - I think she works hard within the context of what royal families call hard work - cause none of them are breaking their backs working.  I think she has been restricted and slammed by not only those in the royal family but by the press and some segments of the public.  Right now I would say she and Felipe are active workers and doing a decent job representing the Spanish people.  I think it is important for  Spanish economic interests that the royals enhance those ties with South American countries and so it would be good for Letizia to be more of a presence in South America and probably in the US too.  Their is a large and business minded Hispanic population in the US and I have noticed the Spanish language magazines do cover the Spanish royal family so she and Felipe could do some good.

I am not trying to convince anyone because that's impossible. But the 9-5 story didn't come from nowhere and there are examples.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

But it is unfair to only mention that with Letizia, because when looking at f.e. the workload of the Dutch Queen Maxima, the overwhelming majority of those functions also take place between 9-5. And she and her husband are on record saying that they want to minimize their workload during the weekends since that is 'quality time with the daughters' and frankly, no one in The Netherlands is bothered by that.

If something happens, they will be there, weekdays, weekends evening, night, morning etc. But when nothing out of the ordinary happens, they will be at home with their daughters at most evenings of the week. Perhaps they will do some prep-work in the evening when the kids are in bed, like many parents. Discuss matters, read up on the next state-visit etc. But I am sure that Felipe and Letizia will do the same thing. And that is not visible in the press, but that doesn't mean it is not work.

As an example I have looked at the duties of the Dutch royals as scheduled and mentioned on the official website.
This weekend, the King will be busy but it is an extraordinary time...the commemoration of Operation Market Garden was 70 years ago this weekend and he will be present and he will receive the Polish president (the Polish troops having played a considerable part in the landing and battle that followed).

* This Tuesday, the Queen will open a museum on micro-organisms (part of Artis one of the eldest public zoos in Europe), this will be in the afternoon.
* The next function will be on October 1 (mind you...that is a week later) and she will attend a symposium, again a day-event, actually morning, because that afternoon she will have another event (both in Rotterdam).
* On October 7 (another week later), the Queen will visit a social workplace (for people who are mentally or physically handicapped) in the morning.
* Another week later, October 14, the Queen will be present at the commemoration of 40 years 'Blijf van mijn lijf'; these are houses were battered wives and children can find a save haven from their abbusive husbands. This too is in the morning.

So based on the official agenda of the Dutch Royal House, the Queen will not work on official functions during the weekends or after 5 pm for a month. And yet no one is complaining about the Dutch Queen having a 9-5 attitude.

Now I am sure that people in the Spanish press have said this, but I always take these stories with a grain of salt. I don't know the alterior motives of the people saying it; they can feel slighted by either Felipe or Letizia, some jealousy can be involved and there are always the types like Penafiel who dislike Letizia for the simple fact that she is not a born Archduchess or Princess. And when it comes to them, they will complain about her even if she would win the Noble Peace Prize or singlehandedly finds jobs for all unemployed Spaniards.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

I don't see how it is unfair when we are in the spanish board. Of course we are going to mention Letizia and not Maxima or whatever.

The thread about Mette being a lazy good for nothing socialite was started by me. So yeah I don't mind talking about the other princess but I also do not see the need to start comparing every time when one is mentioned. If we are in the spanish board what is the problem of examining what Letizia does or doesn't. Same with any other member of the spanish RF or collaterals.

If anyone wants to open a thread about the workload of any member of a RF I would welcome the discussion. Even a thread comparing princesses or whatever.

But every country is a world apart and sometimes it is also interesting to contextualize the work of royals. Spain unfortunately is not the Netherlands so what it works for that country may not work in Spain.

As moderator I am here to remind the members that this is about Letizia and I do want to remind everyone that picking at someone else's perspective  or interpretation of a royal's actions is in fact, off limits. This is a gossip board and for the amusement of everyone here.

Getting back on topic, I do with Letizia would remember that she is the Queen of Spain and start acting like it. As in, stop the morning runs for the kiddos and start holding audiences and start making it a point to be more engaged. She needs to do more audiences, more than just once a week or so appearances, and get it together.

Yes, she needs to do more or she will be slipping into Waity level territory in regards to her 'work' ethic. Sick of 'normalcy' disrupting the duties.

Everyone need "normalcy" in their life to help keep them grounded. What is the point of having children if you are not going to nurture and care for them .We talk about other royals only caring about their public image and leaving raising of their children to the nannies as the reason those children fail in the future. I know this is the SRF thread but this often brought up about QEII and the raising or neglecting    ( depending on how you view it ) of her children . I have read and watched documentaries that said" if the queen cared half has much about her children as she does about her role their marriages may not have ended in divorce" loosely quoted ..

She needs to understand that she could follow CP Victoria's model and integrate her children into her appearances and make it a point to hold audiences. CP Victoria is quite frankly setting the golden standard for moving her daughter into public life and that the example that should be followed.

The difference is that Estelle until recently wasn't going to school so it was easy to take her along these trips. Leonor has been going to school for years now and I don't know how the Spanish situation is, but I doubt parents can keep their children at home at any given day (unless of course in case of illness).
Sure Leonor would learn things when accompanying her father or mother, but I think that right now, the best place for her is to be in school and learn the basics as preparation for the next stages of her education.

And I think that now that Estelle goes to school, we will see less of her on these royal functions.

As for comparing them, I wasn't comparing Letizia with Maxima, I was just wondering why it is only Letizia who is singled out for being a 9-5 royal because frankly, I think all of them are. The royals will 'work' beyond these hours when something extraordinary is happening (a crisis of some sort) or when a state-visit takes place (usually 1-2 outgoing a year and 2-3 incoming ones).

But I am through with this thread. Obviously some are of the Penafiel-class and feel that Letizia can do no good for some reason; she isn't born noble, she snatched a ruggedly handsome prince away from 'you' or some other obscure beef you have to grind with her or with the Spanish RF. Go for it.

I have the same opinion...

I just want to remember this: during 10 years I saw letizia in lot of state dinners... its not at 5 pm belive me.... but I dont remember to see letizia going on ceremonies like movies primieres or high profile dinners with celebraties.... kates does that, just like CP Vitoria...
Vitoria is someone that always had everything and never achived anything... about the daughters presence I never saw leonor behaviour being bad... and she just went to the events that protocol allowed her to go.

She visited a school in New York that is attended by children of Spanish expats in NYC (or probably the Tri-State Area) and also visited the Spanish Academy, a language center that works closely together with the Cervantes Institute.

The Cervantes Institute is a non-profit organisation that strives to promote the teaching and learning of Spanish language and the Spanish culture. The Spanish royals always visit a local branch of the Cervantes Institute whenever they can. On state-visits of Juan Carlos and Sofia, it was always a fixture.
Good to see that the new generation values the work of the Cervantes Institute just as much.

She's no stranger to a sharp suit thanks to a lengthy career in journalism and Queen Letizia certainly knows how to style one.
Chic in a navy suit enlivened with a cerise top, Letizia was every inch the royal style icon as she toured the Valle Del Cicados Institute in Calahorra.
Never one to be left behind in the style stakes, husband King Felipe, 46, also opted for a splash of pink, teaming his dapper suit - also in navy - with a tie that was a perfect match for the colour of Letizia's top.

Nice pictures of the couple and it is nice to see that Letizia also weras shoes without heels to such events. It might have been because of the weather (it can be quite cold in that area I know from experience) or because they had to walk a lot on roygh terrain. Anyway sensible choice.

And so much for the 9-5 mentality...it took place on a Saturday.

Yes, I know very well wat 9-5 means. What a condescending question but that says a lot about you.

Letizia is often accused for sticking to regular office hours, the 9-5 MENTALITY, and that never includes working during the weekends and yet, here she is working during the weekend.
As for working after 5, just this week she was present at the gala to celebrate the 25 anniversary of the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Your such a nasty character on here it doesn't mean that.

9 to 5 means 9 hour work shift.

They don’t even to that. You can’t be a 9 hour Queen Consort when the public pays for you, your life style, your dwellings, plastic surgeries, portraits, vacations & so on while her husband & his family are making money behind the scenes without paying the taxes only the taxes that they get from the public without getting into too much. She’s a peasant so she doesn’t still to this day don’t know how to be or understands to be in that position only knows how to be a socialite or a celebrity. She says the dumbest crap; she doesn’t know protocol when it comes to her position. She doesn’t know protocol on how to greet the born royals & aristos she’s still a peasant regardless her marriage title it’s not hers.
It doesn’t matter this monarch won’t last that long anyways & I’m glad for the people. They have a fake monarch anyways none legitimates in the thrown.

You don't know how much they work. You see that at public events, but you don't know how much time goes into the preparations of a visit. I once knew a (former) lady-in-waiting of the Dutch Queen Beatrix and she said that a state-visit of three days usually required about 9 working days of preparations for the Queen and Prince Claus (when he was still alive).
They read up on the country, region they were about to visit, about the people they would meet (prime-minister, president, mayor of a city, the Dutch community in the country etc). These 9 days were outside the public eye in the privacy of their home.

Does that mean they didn't work? Of course it didn't. They worked, they read stuff, they had meetings with people in advance (like the ambassador of the country).

Royals are indeed not the hardest working people around I give you that. But they work harder than you seem to think because their work entails more than just the handshakes, the smiling at the camera's and the chit-chat with officials.

As for Letizia, she doesn't have to curtsey to born-Princesses. She is a Majesty, and she was an HRH before this. And between themselves, people with the same rank don't curtsey to one another. You make like it or not, but that is how the social etiquette works.

As for the longevity of Felipe and Letizia as monarchs, that is up to the Spanish people and from what I understand from several Spanish colleagues, the popularity of the monarchy is on the rise again.

Being Queen (who's born a princess) but for this person is Queen Consort (who's born a peasant) is a 24/7 job... you can't turn it off & on as you please when the people own you.
I don't wish to respond to you anymore you don't write very wise post.
People do work in the weekends even have 9 to 5 is 9 hour shift on the weekends & I won't respond more to your latest post b'cuz it's not worth it...

Good Luck

Letizia had a massive reception in Vienna! After lunch she went to her hotel, where hundreds of people where expecting in the streets to see the Spanish Queen!

So she is not doing nothing for her country!!! She just can have a lot of people waiting for her!

it seems to me that people do go after commoner royals more so than they do the aristo royals and I suspect for some that is why Letizia is so criticized.

Outside of Spain she is seen as an asset - but of course some inside Spain obviously do not see it that way.

If she's well received I am glad, but I dislike how her 'work' is viewed as arduous. It isn't. She might do a lot of reading and research, but the real work is done by so many others. The appearances are only lasting a half hour, an hour, which mainly have them on display and looking friendly. All Leti and Felipe have to do is read dossiers.

But KF...that doesn't make them any different than other royals! So it is a bit unfair to criticize just Letizia for this. I was once in Sweden (Göteborg) and all of a sudden there was some hassle and security guys etc. It was Victoria who came to City Hall for some commemoration IIRC (it was in the late 1990's). Since I was planning to visit City Hall myself, it has massive historic value, I had to wait outside until she left. Her visit lasted little more than 20 minutes.

And as for the reading of dossiers...I work as a consultant and work for many government agencies in The Netherlands and the work of many civil servants isn't very different; reading dossiers, talking to interest groups, lobbyists, politicians etc. If it is qualified as 'work' for civil servants, why not for the royals? I never said it was hard work :)

Letizia also looks so small (in height) when standing next to Felipe, but when you see her with the women who attended the banquet, she isn't that small at all. Granted, she probably wears stiletto heels, but I am sure the other women wear heels as well.

When you see her standing next to several of the other royal wives, you will notice she isn't that short. She just appears short next to Félipe who is 1.97. I think Letizia is about 1.68 and that is about the average height of women in Spain. That is women of her age. Older women tend to be a lot shorter as you can often see when she is greeting the public.

Red really becomes her. She looks stylish. No panty-showing for her!

And I get the feeling that now that she is Queen, she is getting more self-assured. Most likely also a result of the great confidence the King, her husband, has in her.

A real royal style icon! Letizia is ravishing in red as she as she steps out with a dapper King Felipe at a conference in Madrid

Queen Letizia looked the picture of sophistication as she stepped out today with her husband King Felipe.

Wearing an eye-catching red jacket, which toned perfectly with her husband's deep red tie, the Spanish beauty was every inch the royal style icon as she attended the 75th anniversary of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid.

The stylish royal paired the colour-pop jacket with straight-leg, black trousers, smart court shoes and a printed top.

A bad case of wind! The wintry weather gets the better of Queen Letizia's hair as she and King Felipe arrive in Berlin for a state visit

She's more used to the balmy Spanish sunshine but Queen Letizia has proved that she's no slouch when it comes to stylish winter dressing - even if the wind did get the better of her hair.

Dressed in a stylish cherry-red coat, the 42-year-old was every inch the royal style icon as she arrived in German capital Berlin alongside her husband King Felipe, 46.

The Spanish royal couple are beginning a two day tour of the country, where temperatures - in Berlin at least - are currently hovering around a chilly -2 degrees Celsius.

KF, that picture was taken years ago and although it was an official event, it was an event in Palma de Mallorca surrounding the annual sailing competition. Where the King always arrives in te sailing uniform of shorts-poloshirt-boatshoes.

So she hardly stood out among the other Spanish royals.

She's got specs appeal! A low key Queen Letizia shines in stylish sunglasses as she arrives for charity event in Madrid

She might be a member of one of Europe's leading royal dynasties but Queen Letizia of Spain is happy to forgo most of the trappings.

The 42-year-old arrived for a cancer charity event this morning on foot, having been dropped off in a nearby car park alone and without security guards.

Despite the lack of frills, she was every inch the style queen in her Tyrian purple coat and fashionable aviator sunglasses.

one of the things I like about the way Letizia dresses is her clothes have a distinctly Spanish character very often - the use of embroidery on this red dress is an example of that -

She is  thin - but she does seem to carry off her role with dignity and style - she lo0oked so self assured making that speech - no constant reading from notes because she knew the subject and she knew what she wanted to say - that is professional - the BRF should take note of that -

Afterwards, there was a reception at the royal palace and I love the dress of the Queen. And once more lots of embroidery on the dress.

Is Letizia the most low-key royal in Europe? Spanish queen forgoes official car and WALKS to engagement in Madrid

For the majority of Europe's royals, an official car and a team made up of a squad of protection officers and at least one flunky are essential when carrying out official engagements.

Not so Spain's Queen Letizia, who chose to walk from her home at the Zarzuela Palace to a meeting in Madrid this morning.

Accompanied by a single bodyguard, the 42-year-old royal arrived in a similarly low-key ensemble comprised of a pair of tailored trousers and a tailored red wool coat.

According to several articles, the Spanish King slashed the budget of the RF and takes a 20% cut of his annual pay. He will earn a 'meagre' 234,000. Which is of course for the average person a nice sum, but when compared to the Dutch King, who receives over 1.3 million euro's in private income (and another 4 million to pay his staff; next to the money Queen Maxima gets, another 1.5 million or so), the Spanish King is paid very modestly.

And now even more modest. The King is doing this as part to do his bit when the Spanish economy is still facing hard times.

What are the Spanish royals expenses, though? The State maintains their homes/palaces, I believe, and gardeners, chauffeurs etc. I think their travel and entertaining expenses are paid for them too, but it's very hard to get any information really. From what I've read I believe the King and Queen of Spain pay for their food and drink, a housekeeper, their clothing and their children's clothing and education, and that's it. Different royal families divide things up in different ways. I don't know what occurs in the Dutch royal family, however, I believe the expenses of the Belgian royals grew massively in the last few years too.

No, HM is not frugal at all. She bought wimpo a helicopter last year, out of the public purse, and funded his renovations in 2 properties the same way, didn´t use her own money.    Many people go up in arms in articles and say HM and chas paid it all, and wimpo some of it, but the the truth is very different.

The clothing will be a considerable part of their expenses I would imagine. Queen Letizia isn't the one to dress most lavishly, but still she will need several evening/ gala gowns a year. And since hers are all custom made, I would imagine that the prices for these dresses start at a few thousands euro's. And she can't recycle her day-to-day outfit all too often either, so she will need more clothes than the average person. The same BTW can be said for all women with public roles; Merkel, Hillary Clinton, the Danish PM etc and also royals.
So I doubt she will be able to make due with my clothing budget which is about EUR 500 a month.
The King buys his suits from a tailor, handmade (I know, a Spanish partner in my firm has the same tailor in Madrid and has 'bumped' into the King when he was still Prince of Asturias). And these suits don't come cheap either; 2000-3000 a suit.

They probably also pay the English nanny they have for the children, as well as a housekeeper and maybe a valet for the King. The secretaries are probably paid for by the general royal budget. As is most transportation. However, private transportation is being paid for by the royals themselves IIRC. So when Queen Sofia visited her daughter Cristina when she was living in DC, the King would pay her ticket from his private income.

And of course things like decoration of the private residence (the villa in the grounds of La Zarzuela) most likely is also paid from the private purse. So a make-over of the bedrooms of the girls as they get older. But hey...who knows, the Queen may even take the girls to Ikea for a new bunkbed  :tehe:

As for how the Dutch do this, that would be OT here so I will go deeper into that in the topic on the Dutch royals.

The budget assigned to them is not what they really spend. There are lot more costs than end up being the responsibility of other gov departments and we also have the "state patrimony" used and abused by them and high ranking officials.

Like building a petit palace for your mistress http://vozpopuli.com/actualidad/54317-el-pabellon-de-caza-del-rey-juan-carlos-ni-rastro-en-la-transparencia-de-patrimonio-nacional-y-zarzuela

I had no idea. And I thought that the renovations for KP was for asbestos as was Amner Hall. I never knew we paid for it.

Now I realise how people were up in arms about it. I thought we paid for it as it was unsafe because of all the asbestos.

If it wasn't like this they wouldn't be able to keep us with their lifestyle.

There is very little info of their budget both on the press and on the laws.

I don't think either Felipe or Leti live a frugal life. Not with nannies, servants (the best trained and experienced are not cheap), and security. I don't think Leti's gowns and dresses are cheap and custom made is KILLER on the budget. Throw in trips, it's not at all frugla. Then there's jets, plane tickets, hotels, meals when doing trips, security arrangements, none of it is cheap.

But that hardly stands out. Representing your country...the core business of royals and elected Heads of State, means you have to travel. Opening exhibitions of your country's most famous painters, like Letizia in Vienna (but Maxima in New York opening a Vermeer exhibition is another example). So those things are regular expenses that would also be made for an elected Head of State. And sometimes even more...Hollande of France travels with a massive security detail, as does president Obama.

And they cannot decide whether or not to skip the security, the amount of security they get is the result of a threat analysis made by the country's army, secret service, the police etc. And with the history of ETA killing a number of politicians in the past, I am sure that the security risks for the Spanish royal couple are deemed higher than for the Grandduke and Grandduchess of Luxemburg or the King and Queen of The Netherlands.

As for the dresses of Letizia...yes, they will be expensive. But damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. If she would buy off-the-rack H&M, or even Zara, people would complain as well. Now she buys her dresses with Spanish designers, some of them quite young and still struggling to find a stage. And a Queen, any public figure, can be that stage.

And let's be honest...we slam Kate for wearing ill-fitting clothes (very cheap ones at times) and say she should make the effort of getting some proper bespoke dresses. And Letizia is doing that (and mind you, Letizia is Queen and not, like Waity, wife of the heir to the heir) and some still find flaw.

As for frugal...of course they aren't frugal compared to the average world-citizen. But compared to their Dutch counterparts, they have a very low private income. Also the Belgian royals have a higher private income and let's not even go to the BRF.

I don't question how much they spend but it would be "nice" to know how much their budget is really is and what they spend the money on.

After getting that info and reading then I will be able to discuss if they are frugal or not. Right now my argument is that there is zero transparency and that they are selling an image of frugality that has no basis known.

BTW what struggling spanish designer has Letizia wore lately? Not arguing against only curious.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Countess of Holland on February 18, 2015, 08:14:43 pm
I'm not into designers, but I thought I read that the blue dress, with the embroidery, that she wore recently was by a young Spanish designer who recently graduated. And I would imagine that given the state of the Spanish economy, overall Spanish designers are facing hard times, no matter how established they are.
And whenever the designer of her dress(es) is mentioned, it is always a Spanish name from Madrid, Barcelona etc.

In this respect, I prefer Letizia who is supporting the designers of her own country. Maxima may on occasion wear something from Dutch designer Jan Taminiau (like the blue dress at the inauguration), but more often she wears dresses from Belgian Eduoard Vermeulen or Italian designers. Her wedding-dress was from Versace. Now had it been an Argentinean designer it would have made some sense, something from her home-country and all. But an Italian designer for her marriage to the Dutch Crown Prince...no sense.

As for the spending patterns of the royals. I think we will never know for sure (hell, I won't even be able to tell you my exact spending pattern) and I am OK with that. They are entitled to some privacy and I don't need to know what kind of meat they eat during the week and what kind of magazines they read in their free time or whether they drink Coke or Pepsi.
There needs to be a balance between the royals having some privacy and at the same time transparency about the overall costs; how much is spend on the upkeep of the palaces, the money spend on travels (for work or private), the costs of staff and what is paid by the royals (nannies) and what staff is for 'the job', like a secretary who keeps their calendar.

Which dress?

Letizia uses Mango, Hugo Boss and Uterqüe (a zara off brand) mostly. Then she wears Varela. She has got things from Ailanto but I only remember a couple of pieces. The less known brands she uses are for hats, shoes or bags.

BTW spanish designer had never done well... though they (press and gov) always say in respect to our fashion week that it's the fourth in the world... in their dreams of course.

^Agree.  She looks lovely.  In fact for me personally she appears to know how to dress, what suits her and how to wear it to her advantage.  Make up always good, hair groomed and elegant.  She has stepped up to the mark and doing well in my opinion. She shows a caring side, she looks interested and gets involved when in meetings, not looking all vague and silly.  She is not perfect, none of us are, but she is getting it right in my eyes, can´t fault her much at all.  Quite natural too, maybe her tv training helps with that, but she does really well.

The president of Colombia is visiting Spain. The King and Queen were on hand to welcome the president and his wife.

Letizia looking lovely, wonderful overcoat, very stylish and elegant. And no gurning, touching of the hair and I love her soft make-up and stunning earrings.

No clenched jaws for Felipe and instead of just stoically looking ahead of him, he is looking at his wife and although you can't see his face, you see the corner os his mouth and eye and he isn't looking at her in a hostile, William-kind of way.

Some lovely photos of them here from the Gala Dinner.  He is always looking at her, and they appear to be quite happy and comfortable together.  But then to be fair he has not got to be worrying about how she will behave, if she does anything wrong, or what she says, so I suppose he can afford to be relaxed around her.  I gain the impression though that they seem to be quite happy together.

State visit to France cancelled.

The King and Queen of Spain just arrived in Paris when hearing about a plane-crash of a plane that had taken off in Barcelona and was flying to Düsseldorf. All 150 passengers and flight-crew are presumed dead.

Because the accident took place over France and the French authorities now have other issues to worry about, and because several dozens of passengers were Spanish, the Spanish and French governments have decided to cancel the state-visit for now and re-schedule for the future.

A wise decision I think. When so many families in Spain are in mourning, it would be appropriate to continue with a glittering state visit.

And I am not sure about the hair, it makes her look a bith harsh with the sharp corners.

In videos she always seems to conduct herself with great decorum and it's quite clear her husband adores her.

And she seems pretty engaged with her hosts and the people she meets (that picture of her and the girl is quite lovely).

She clearly enjoys the visits and I am glad that she is more visible now than when she was Princess of Asturias. At the time it was said that Juan Carlos didn't want her to outshine her husband so she didn't get as much roles and visits (and very little solo-visits) as she wanted. Obviously her husband the new King isn't as worried about being outshined and he knows he can trust her to do a good job and present Spain as a royal should.

This article has so many fails that I cannot stop laughing  I had expected Politico to at least get a couple of opinions and not interviewing only someone who worked in one of the most conservative newspapers who hasn't been relevant for the last 40 years or so... it also doesn't mention the change of the political scenario in Spain with the last elections.

Instead of making the discussion personal you could have discussed the article. This is what  the forum is for.

No problem I wont try to offer new arguments or new info. As I see that here only one way is welcomed.

:bored: :bored:

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

And what arguments did you make?

The article has many fails? Please, enlighten the non-Spanish posters.
You said that the opinions Politico quoted were biased...opinions often are. You could direct us to articles (preferably in English) that show us other opinions.
And as for the changed political situation...the article was about the first year of the King and Queen and didn't especially focus on the future. And sure, the future might be different, but if the UK polls have told us anything, it is that polls cannot be trusted and that voters are often more barkers than biters.

So please...tell me why you are not happy with the way Felipe and Letizia perform their duties. And come with arguments that make sense. The argument 'she had a nose job so...' is as relevant as saying that she doesn't do a proper job because she uses pruple hairbands instead of yellow ones.

Reread my post I havent said anything you say in your post and continue to make the discussion about me and not the article which is against the rules of the forum. I do not have to justify my opinions.

I can discuss every phrase in the article and you will continue complaining about me and not the article itself.

Agree totally.  I have always liked her, and she has stepped up to the mark well.  She also appears to have learned a lot along the way, and I am very happy for her.  Her surgery was most successful, although Philipe must have fallen in love with her as she was, but if he is happy with how she looks post surgery then there is no problem, and it has enhanced her looks, no denying that, she looks great.  I think some of us might also be tempted to have some surgery done if we had the financial reserves that Letizia has, I know I would.   I love the way she is natural with people, listens to them when they talk and can actually talk back and make a sensible contribution to the conversation.  I am sure Philipe must be very proud of her, he certainly looks as if he is in the photos of them, and body language rarely lies.

I too loved the shoes, I thought they were excellent and looked good on her.   Shall have to investigate who sells them, or something similar, a really great summer look.

There is no future. The elections already have happened. It has changed the political scenario greatly.

But it weren't the national elections and the national elections for the Cortes will have the greatest impact on the future of Spain and the position of the monarchy. That is why I said that the elections are still in the future. And we will have to see how Podemos will do. Especially if they fail to make a dent (or form a coalition) in the cities where they became an important player, it will affect the outcome of the election.

For all the differences between nations, the electorate is overall conservative. And I don't mean they vote conservative, I mean that on many occasions the electorate isn't keen on experiments. And it is easier (and safer) to allow an experiment on a local level than on a national level. You saw it in the UK where UKIP won big in several local elections but did poorly on the national level. In my own country it is the same thing, the ultra-right is always doing well in the polls, but when push comes to shove, the Dutch electorate (thank heavens) returns to the more established parties for the Second Chamber.

So we will see what the future national elections in November bring.

Obviously El Pais is a pro-establishment newspaper and surveys are never 100% neutral, but still, the numbers are pretty good and it says that even among people who say they plan to vote Podemos, a majority of 64% approves of how the King is fulfilling his duties.

I don't agree with the article either. I've lived in Spain for a very long time and I totally agree with Alexandrine when she says this article has a lot of fails. People are fed up with monarchy, corruption, scandals. The political scene has changed in ways that tensions get higher and higher every day. If Podemos wins, I can only wish no civil war starts, also, I can bet my money that Felipe VI will be the last king of Spain.

Apparently Felipe has stripped Cristina of her title the Palma de Mallorca Dukedom:

King Felipe VI of Spain has stripped his sister, Infanta Cristina, of her royal dukedom.

Quote
A spokesperson for the royal court confirmed the news last night: “The Official Journal of the state will tomorrow publish a royal decree by which His Majesty the King will revoke the use of the title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca by Her Royal Highness the Infanta Cristina.”

A royal decree, signed by both the King and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, came into effect at midnight between June 11 and 12, stating:

“Royal Decree 470/2015, of June 11, by which the faculty of using the title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca is revoked from Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Cristina. According to the mandate of article 6 of Royal Decree 1368/1987, of November 6, regarding the Royal Family & Regents’ titles, treatments and honours regime, I have resolved to revoke the attribution to Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Cristina of the faculty of using the title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, which was bestowed upon her by Royal Decree 1502/1992, of September 26.″

Infanta Cristina and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, have been involved in the Nóos scandal for the past four years, with Mr Urdangarín accused of corruption and money laundering. Cristina herself was ordered to stand trial for tax fraud, though no date has been set.

I have no link to the story, but it's from one of the associations I'm a member of.

Plenty of links as it happened two weeks ago:

El Pais in English:
http://elpais.com/elpais/2015/06/12/inenglish/1434096571_132021.html

The Daily Mail:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3121139/Spain-King-s-removes-title-sister-facing-fraud-trial.html

The Guardian:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/12/spanish-king-strips-sister-of-duchess-title-amid-tax-evasion-scandal

And there are many more articles. I think this is mostly done to make sure Inaki can no longer use the title (he was entitled to do so as in Spain men can take their title from their wives). Cristina remains an Infanta of Spain, apparently under the Constitution of the 1970's (not sure which year), a Spaninh Infanta cannot be stripped from that title.

Cristina wrote a letter claiming that she asked to be stripped of this title a day before the royal decree was issued. This obviously makes no sense since it will take more than a day to have a royal decree drafted, have the appropriate  consent from certain governmental bodies and issue it in the morning.
I guess she was trying to save face but did so in a rather pathetic manner in my opinion.

I do too, beautiful colour and a stunning dress.  I think she does well and has coped very well since becoming Queen of Spain.  She somehow nearly always gets it right, and she has the confidence to be herself.  I am sure, like the rest of us, she is not perfect, but she is, IMO, doing a darned good job and is a credit to the position she holds.

The maternal grandfather of Queen Letizia has died from coronary problems. He was 98 of age.

Because of the death (and I assume the upcoming funeral), the Queen has cancelled her attendance at the Spanish Fashion Awards.

Felipe was last seen on August 8, the last day of the Copa del Rey sailing-competition. And I don't see a problem with that. The Dutch King hasn't been seen since early July because he is on vacation, although some of his work continues, just as it was for her mother (who signed plenty of bills into law in Tavernelle, Italy). But being away from the public eyes for a couple of weeks...I have no problem with that.

Totally agree, but I think people expect the Spanish royals to show themselves freqently during their summer because Juan Carlos and Sofia did.

However, different couples have different life styles and from my (limited) point of view, the present Spanish royal couple seem to be enjoying eachothers company a lot more than JC and Sofia. So they perhaps tend to be more private and enjoy the privacy whereas Sofia probably loathed the summer because it meant spending more (visible) time with her cheating husband. And of course the present couple has two young children who will need more parental attention and care than the three children of JC and Sofia over the last 20 years or so.

It reminds me of a former partner at my company who was also very active, was member of several charities, worked 60 hours a week (or more) and was hardly ever home. At the end, his wfe filed for divorce, after a year or so he got a new girlfriend and all of a sudden he went home at 18:00 in the evening to be with his new girlfriend (and later she became the new wife). At one time I tongue-in-cheek said I 'missed' his e-mails from 22:30 or later. He smiled and said: "I have better things to do now".
His work had become an escape from his first bad marriage.

The same could have been the case for JC and Sofia: if we spend a lot of time in public we don't have to bother with one another.

The same could have been the case for JC and Sofia: if we spend a lot of time in public we don't have to bother with one another.

Private trips can be done alone. JC and Sofia would have had a much better time if they have traveled separated and not have had to spend time together in Mallorca. They did it because they knew it was good PR for them.

Sofia was cheated publicly during all the summers in Mallorca, especially during the 90's when he had a long term mistress called Marta Gaya (http://www.semana.com/gente/articulo/jaque-al-rey/18405-3), you think she wouldn't have preferred more private time?

Being in Mallorca also doesn't mean they have to be in public 100% of the time. Marivent is a very big place with different houses for each of them. They can also enjoy private beaches that belong to the Ministry of Defense.

The children are also a good point on why they should stay more time in Mallorca. It's a way to know them and see a more personal view rather than the five min every six months or so. People at least had a nice view of the infantas and Felipe because they had seen them learn sailing, skiing, going to festivities. They tried.

I also don't see how it's more difficult to take care of the new infantas? It's not as if Mallorca is dangerous or something.

But the problem is not even Mallorca. They usually went to Baqueira where they have a house to ski during the winter months. They haven't visited possibly for years. They have a house in Canary islands where they spent Christmas, they also don't visit (JC is right now there).

So Mallorca is not to their taste, there are lots of places in Spain to choose. They could give up Marivent especially now that the new leftist groups are trying to at least open part of the palace.

I don't see the problem with spending 1 month or so in a place for PR and to show what nice RF we have and then go two weeks to an unknown place. You can create new traditions without making more problems than they were. I don't kid myself thinking that JC or Sofia spent all the summer in Marivent.

I also don't see how it's more difficult to take care of the new infantas? It's not as if Mallorca is dangerous or something.

I wasn't talking about danger, I was talking about the four wanting to spend quality time together without the ever-present intrusive eyes from the media and the public. And that can probably better be done outside Spain where they are less known.

And as a child who has spend many, many summers in the vacation home of my parents in the Dordogne in France, I can only imagine that it is much nicer for the girls to visit other places during the summer as well. And with the royals having the financial possibilities to travel and to show the world to their daughters, I see nothing wrong with them travelling to places like Turkey, the US or whatever place.

But that is just my opinion. Perhaps the general public in Spain feels differently, and that is essentially what should matter the most for the King who undoubtedly wants to strengthen his position in order to leave a healthy monarchy to his daughter in a few decades.

I doubt the King spoke about the delivery of his daughters with president Obama :). But perhaps the two men bonded over being the only man in a female household.

Anyway, based on the paper the King had in hand, he came prepared, and probably instructed by the Spanish government because that is how it is done in a parliamentary/ constitutional monarchy. Watch and learn Willy.

Really? You think this is about a few words? I am sure the King was instructed to discuss several matters with the president and in these matters it is important to have all the details right. Even the slightest nuance can make a world of difference.

To talk to the US president 'off the cuff' as representative of the Spanish government would have been very irresponsible. It is one thing to do so as an heir to the heir who is not part of the government. But the Spanish King is Head of the Government and as such, his communications with another Head of State are more important and need to be weighed very carefully.

If it was a speech or something like that I understand but for a conversation seems weird and he seems unprepared. Image is everything and he could have hide it for the photos or the foreign minister could have given the papers later. Second it's like a tiny paper that cannot hold many info and the foreign minister could help to remind what issues should be talked about?

I suppose Obama is not perfect and has important papers or people to guide him but he knows to work his image.

Also I checked photos in the oval office with WA, Charles and Wills and no one appeared with a paper  ??? :-

BTW so embarrassing that the ones accompanying the king do not have a good level of english to carry a conversation or follow it. Hope not all of them are from the foreign affairs ministry...

Well, I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Having a little note with keypoints is in my opinion not 'bad preparation'. Now I never talk to Heads of State but have had meetings with high ranking Dutch civil servants and whenever I have a meeting with them, I always write down the points I want to discuss and prepare them with my team and my director in advance and write the gest of the point we want to get across down.
And this is all while I will be having a discussion in my own mother tongue about a topic in which I am an expert.

If I would be having a discussion with a civil servant from a UK department about a wide range of topics, I would definitely need a little list, if for nothing else purely for my own peace of mind.

A monarchy is bigger than one person, otherwise it would be essentially a presidency. So people who loose trust in an institution based on one individual aren't the kind of supporters a monarchy needs to survive.

Especially not as their reasons not to like Letizia seem to be mostly snobbish.

^ Agree.  Not to mention how much damage Juan Carlos caused when photographed with a wild animal he had killed for fun, with his lady friend next to him  -  not forgetting that at that point in time he was heading the Spanish area of the World Wildlife Trust.  The Spanish rf need to look at their own first before blaming Queen Letizia for lack of popularity, loads of skeletons in their cupboards.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

I do think she was an inappropriate choice as future queen both for her past and how she has filled her role. IMO she hasn't understood even now what her role really is.

The info available in english is very little to understand how the SRF really works and the relation to the country. And I mean really getting it like reading books about them, reading articles by certain journos, keeping up with the agendas, events and relation between them and their circle. Even with news who are not related to them at first glance.

So I can see how not getting all that info Letizia looks good on paper. And even with her past she could have made a good queen. But I don't think she will and it will take time but she will fall as JC did and Felipe will probably go with her. Maybe not in five years but in twenty.

The King and Queen of Spain, together with Queen Sofia, attended the Princess of Asturias awards in Oviedo. Until he became King, Felipe was honorary chairman of the organisation. Now his daughter is, but until she becomes of age, he father performs these tasks in her name.

I love the dress the Queen is wearing:
http://desvistiendo-a-letizia.blogs.diezminutos.es/files/2015/10/letizia0110.jpg

And I am sure Kate would love it if William would ever look at her in this manner:
http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Princesa+de+Asturias+Awards+2015+Day+2+7-ZFAOYH9QHx.jpg
http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Princesa+de+Asturias+Awards+2015+Day+2+DTOkCfhyQ2Zx.jpg

As for understanding her role, from my point if view, Letizia is doing exactly what Queen Sofia has been doing all these years: support her husband, support certain causes within Spain, maintaining the ties with countries in Latin and South America, and presenting Spain at home and abroad (in state visits, opening exhibitions of Spanish works at art like in Vienna etc).

For the rest, the wife of the monarch has no official, constitutional, role (and Spain isn't different in this regard, the same applies in The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden etc...the spouse never has an official role). She is there to support, to represent and to secure a next generation and with Leonor and Sofia she has done that as well.

But I know some of you don't agree with me. That is your prerogative.

Like you, I am fan. Yes, she has made mistakes in the past, we all did. The % of divorces in Europe and the US show that it is a common mistake.

But she worked to make her own living prior to meeting Felipe and she was rather successfull in doing so. Being the anchorwoman of the newsprogram of TVE, the biggest Spanish channel, is no small thing.
And she wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms by Juan Carlos and Sofia (although the latter seems to have adjusted her position) but she took it in stride, knowing that Felipe was there for her. The resentment Juan Carlos had (has?) for her, was also a reason why she hardly had individual functions. But Felipe has been given her his trust and that resulted in plenty of solo visits, including abroad to South-America where she visited projects of several Spanish charities while also talking to local politicians (I forgot which country...Guatemala?).

As for her cosmetic surgery...I tend to believe that it was partly done for medical reasons. After all Letizia has been in the public eye for years, long before she got to know and married Felipe. She was on television almost every day. If she really had been annoyed by her appearance, she would have had that surgery earlier, I imagine. But she didn't. So that tells me that there could be a different motive, like sleep apneu that sometimes intensives after a pregnancy and can be solved with a nose-job that will widen the airway.
And of course the SRF never made a secret of the surgery being done. Whereas the BRF won't say a thing about any surgery Kate has had, and she has had several. The differences between Kate in 2009-2010 and Kate now are too big to have bee caused by just one operation.

Medical procedures? Really?

She was in TVE news for six months and the rest was substituting. BTW you dont reach there by talent but by connections. Unless you pass the exam to become full time employee which she didnt. As her sister didnt for the foreign ministry.

I dont think many of the things criticised about her are her fault but Felipe but as Pedro J says no one can find fault with him.

Reading several Spanish articles and living in Spain for so long made me realise how she's not suited for her role, IMHO.

^I've never understood the fascination with the 'beach wave' look and how few look right in it.  From certain angles, it works for her, but overall, it's too contrived.  If you want a bushier, curlier look, move to California.  Don't try to fake it.

That's it!
She looks yellow rather then tanned :-
That's odd for a Mediterranean type no?
Maybe it's the light or the jacket (unless she has liver issues :sly:)

^You're funny.  I do sense perhaps some spray tanning going on there which would account for a little yellow cast which I don't see in other photos of her.  But, if she wants to add color, it beats being in the sun.  Normally, she has very pale skin or slightly browned from the sun so maybe the printing of the photos is a bit off, too?

But, I was referring to the "beach wave" hair curling which people try to get when they use their curling rods straight up and down to try and get that salt air curl that is everywhere, naturally, in California.  It just doesn't work when it's forced.  Well, on very few anyway.  If you have any curl in your hair at all and spend any true beach time on the Pacific, and for some reason, especially the west coast of the US, your hair will just act that way, you twirl your finger and you're done.  She seems to be trying to get that effect and it's not working for her, really.  Plus, it falls apart pretty quickly.

Cute card, showing the next gen in a relaxed 'squeeze hug' pose. (I love my sister soo much, look!)

And the sig's are funny too
Sofia turned her final a in an @ around her name, very 21th century  :June: :tehe: she still has a kid like fun side to all this royal stuff.
Leonore's sig is more serious like daddy, she's already 10 after all! :snob: :sigh:

Indeed...double digits. Means life is getting more serious :)

The signature of Sofia is cute. I am sure we all tried to come up with a signature when young.

As for the monarchy: it depends on who you ask I think. From what I understand from Spanish colleagues and the Spanish press (I understand Spanish when reading but am lousy at talking Spanish) the new couple has increased the support for the monarchy. Of course it was at an absolute low thanks to the actions of JC and Cristina.

They will stop being the hosts of a prize that bears the name of the heir to the crown. According to the gov they want to separate the prize from the monarchy.  :cookie:

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

Who do you mean with the second 'they' (They want to seperate...). The government? Or the royal couple?

I would expect the first, especially in light of the outcome of the elections where a leftist government has more chances to succeed, with PSOE not wanting to work with PP and the man from the liberal conservative party saying he does not want to enter a coalition.
And as the price is government-sponsored, I doubt the King has a deciding voice in the matter, that is not how it works in modern-day monarchies.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Princess of Asturias prices...will the King (who at the moment stands in for his underage daughter) also withdraw from this price (forced by the government or not)?

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Alexandrine on December 23, 2015, 08:44:36 pm
It's the regional government that wants to sever the relationship with the crown. These prizes are very little known but it was a huge celebration every year and a promotion of the close relationship the monarchy had with Navarra. So it's a huge hit for them (monarchy).

The regional gov of Asturias has also been considering reducing the funds for the prize of the Princess of Asturias. However, this is the biggest gem for the monarchy. Felipe will move every stone to keep them so doubtful that they will change a lot in the short term.

These has nothing to do with the recent elections but it's more of a result from the regional elections. What will happen at the national level no one knows (except Merkel  :tehe:).

Lovely photos of Queen Letizia  -  cath medd eat your heart out.  Give her credit, she has worked hard at her role in life.  She mostly gets it right, so pleased for her.  Humble beginnings like cath medd, ends there IMO.  One is a worker the other is a shirker with no brains.  A real credit to the Spanish rf, they can be very proud of her.

Waity  didn't have humble beginnings though.... she has a vile common as muck mother who never taught her decorum in any shape or form whereas Letizia does come from 'humble' middle class roots but was obviously brought up to have a good work ethic and manners/decorum

I love Queen Letizia. She is elegant, beautiful, smart, dresses totally appropriate and is very hard working. She has learned a lot and improves with each passing day. She does the SRF proud. And after the atrocious scandal of Cristina, she has helped stabilize this monarchy. It would behoove The Potato Head tremendously to study this great queen.

Exactly and I think that Kate entered a more welcoming family than Letizia.

At first I think many people in the BRF gave Kate the benefit of the doubt. Letizia was seen as an intruder, especially by her father-in-law the King. She must have been under inmense pressure all the time, knowing that people are rooting for you to fail.

Kate never had that pressure, she was given the time to slowly get used to royal life. And she threw that support back into their faces.

Love the red coat and the cream suit, especially the jacket with the integral flower.

Yes, she has had a lot of cosmetic work done, but in her defence I would say she is older than cath medd and look what cosmetic surgery has done to her, her whole face is saggy and drooping, yet she is only just 34. As for cath medd dental work, the less said about that the better.  At QL makes an effort in many ways, and is much more attractive than cath medd, so she has a head start there.

She means business! Queen Letizia of Spain dons a chic grey trouser suit as she joins King Felipe on a trip to Puerto Rico

She's known to be fond of a trouser suit, perhaps because of her former career as a newsreader, and Queen Letizia showed off penchant for business-like chic as she stepped out in Puerto Rico.

The Spanish monarch is visiting the Caribbean island along with King Felipe for the Seventh Spanish Language International Congress.

Letizia teamed her pale grey suit jacket and matching tapered trousers with matching peep toe heels and a clutch

She looked to be taking style notes from the Duchess of Cambridge who also stepped out in head to toe shades of grey for the Commonwealth Day service in London earlier this week.

However the Spanish Queen added a splash of contrasting colour with a black and white patterned blouse

Many people are wondering why The Obscenity known as Kate The Potato Head couldn't wear something as stylish and perfect as La Reine Letizia is wearing here. This is beautiful outfit with an Eisenhower black jacket and lovely linen pants. But Oh No. Not The Obscenity who we all know is a major, selfish, narcissistic, insane a$$hole. No way would she wear pants that didn't show off her nasty, used crotch and butt. No Way. Insanity My Friends. She needs to be locked up and never seen again.

^Can´t come quick enough.  HM should never have allowed her in.  I would take QL any day over council cath.  QL is a commoner, with an ordinary family, but she worked, and also she has worked hard at her royal "job" too.  People ciriticse her for cosmetic surgery, but at least she looks nice with it, unlike council cath who looks as if her cheeks have been filled with lumpy mashed potato and only succeeds in "melting" and dropping down to make her jowls worse.  Maybe council cath should ask QL for the name of her cosmetic surgeon, because he/she looks to do a decent job.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Countess of Holland on May 28, 2016, 07:38:37 pm
Agreed and I think that that person had more support than Letizia who had to deal with her father-in-law's disapproval. And I know from my own experience that that can be very daunting. The mother of my former boyfriend was quite clear that she felt I wasn't good enough for her son, she had wanted her son to hook up with the daughter of one of her tennis-friends.
And that disapproval ate me up, and that is just at a regular family who is not covered by the press and I didn't have to work with her, she wasn't my 'boss'.

I think that it is one of the reasons why I have a soft spot for Letizia. I admire her for how she has handled it all and how she is holding herself, both as Princess of Asturias and now as Queen.

BTW When it comes to body language, the world of the Borbons and the Cambridges couldn't be further apart. Whenever King Felipe looks at his wife and talks to her, he has a smile (sometimes big, sometimes a faint smile) on his face. Whenever William looks at Kate, he has clenched jaws.

Back to work! Queen Letizia highlights her trim figure in a floral midi skirt as she joins her husband to celebrate the centenary of Camilo Jose Cela's birth

She's been enjoying the summer holidays with her family but it was business as usual for Queen Letizia as she returned to her royal duties on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old, who is regarded as one of the globe's hardest-working royals, looked chic and smart as she joined her husband at commemorations of the centenary of Camilo Jose Cela's birth at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, Spain.

The mother-of-two highlighted her trim figure in a floral midi skirt, which she teamed with a sheer royal blue shirt and wore with a thin belt.

She may have just returned from a month-long summer break, but Queen Letizia was back to her stylish best today as she attended her second official engagement of the week.
The Spanish royal got back to work on Friday, and looked every inch the stylish royal as she attended a series of meetings at Madrid's Zarzuela Palace.
Dressed in a red houndstooth blouse and matching stilettos, the mother-of-two kept it smart with a pair of high-waisted white trousers.

Why can´t council cath wear something elegant like that and stop flashing her nether regions.  Loved the outfit, especially loved the shoes, although will say more appropriate for evening wear as opposed to a daytime engagement  -  but still gorgeous shoes for me. She rarely gets it wrong.

This lying drivel in the article gave me a good laugh

From Kate Middleton, to Queen Letizia, we're not short of well-dressed royalty right now!

Queen Letizia is up in the higher echelons, council cath is in the gutter  -  she has no idea about style, fashion or what suits her.  Oops, forgot, she somehow seems to the ink skin tight jeggings with camel toe are appropriate for a public engagement.

How on earth they can take an article on QL and try and indicate that council cath is in the same league is utterly ridiculous.  QL all the way for me, I like her, Phipe and their two daughters very much.

Queen Letizia is truly a stylish fashionista. Love this outfit. Those shoes flat out make this looks. Again, we have a commoner who married a prince and knows how to behave in all scenarios. Felipe and Spain are so lucky to have her. What an asset.

Queen Letizia displays her VERY slender frame as she is mobbed by young fans during a visit to a primary school in Almeria

She's one of the world's most famously slender royals but Queen Letizia proved that she is body confident today as she showcased her slim figure in Almeria.

The Spanish royal flaunted her slight frame with figure hugging black trousers and a billowing white blouse as she stepped out in the Andalusian city.

The mother-of-two looked right at home as she greeted dozens of primary aged children at the Gines Morata school.

Doesn´t she just get it right, time and time again.  She interacts so well with the kids, they look delighted to see her, she holds their hands, hugs them, all so very, very natural.  Can´t say the same about council cath, looks as though she always wants to go and wash her hands, stiff with the kids, they look bored.  She may have her faults, but she is certainly doing a wonderful job as Queen of Spain, she wins hand down every time for me.

A model queen! Letizia of Spain shows off her slender physique as she joins King Felipe to greet Rio 2016 Paralympic medalists in Madrid
She's one of the world's most famously slender royals and today Queen Letizia proved she is proud of her body showcasing her toned physique in a figure hugging dress.
The Spanish royal showcased her petite frame in a fitted white dress as she welcomed Paralympic medalists at her home in El Pardo Palace, Madrid.
The mother-of-two displayed her enviably toned figure on Wednesday with her washboard stomach visible through her elegant white dress.

The whole event looks just as it should, not tacky and uncomfortable as with bill and cath medd.  The gown was stunning, and that red coat, fell in love with that completely.  A warm smile, interest in people, alert to who is around who, acting with decorum, elegance and class. Cue council cath at the home of the Paris Ambassador in Paris the other week.  Tacky, common, gauche, gurning, false smile, awful clothes  -  no comparison is there.  QL might have her faults, by my God in no way is council cath in the same league as her  -  she is the Ferrari, council cath is the Skoda at its tackiets  -  in the UK they used to call it a skip on wheels, if you bough a Skoda you we ridiculed and laughed at so much, it was just a joke.  I know VW took over Skoda, but it still has the reputation of a nasty, cheap and cheerful car. QL is Top of the Range.  Put those two together and council cath will look just what she is, a failed try to make good from sink estate origins.

No idea, but I am a huge fan and always have been.  She has made her mistakes, we all have, oh to be perfect  -  I wish. Although probably boring to be perfect  lol   She usually gets it just right with her clothes, suitable for the occasion, and plays the part well.   I lived in Spain for many years, and still go back to visit friends, and QL does appear to have many who like and support her, so not everyone dislikes her.

I admire her tremendously. She has worked diligently to improve the image of the RF which was so damaged by JC, Cristina and her husband. She makes Felipe very happy. She is raising 2 beautiful daughters. She always dresses elegantly and is beautiful. She enjoys her job and is engaged with her subjects. She speaks very well and is a very intelligent woman. I can see why the outfit would be considered inappropriate, even in (higher end) jewellery shops this would be inappropriate, simply because the shoulders are bare (the shoes could pose an issue as well, being a sandal with the open heel and a bit too high). If she'd just have cap sleeves I'd say this is ok though for the occasion and all, when it's scorching hot it's hard(er) to dress in more layers and it's a nice get-away from the usual dresses & skirts. I feel for men who in summer when sticking to business attire must be dying of heat  :o

In that photo link, HM looks very relaxed and happy in King Felipe's presence. More so than we see with her own family.

Maybe because she's just reserved ordinarily and won't show her emotions here in the UK, but with a fellow royal and monarch,  she can relax more.

Either way, I do think she looks happy.

^^^ I don't know whether true, but believable. MC is said to be pretty nasty and made enemies as soon as she hooked up with Pavlos, flaunting her wealth, gossiping and leaving instantly a bad impression on the whole (Danish branch and beyond) family. MC doesn't seem to be particularly welcome anywhere and is I think is only ever invited when she has to be. Leti also wasn't at Pavlos bday last year in England, Felipe was. Felipe kinda had to be.. Maxima was there too.

^ That video looks beyond weird. No idea what is going on, but it looks bad. I have read (ages ago!) that Leti and her m-i-l Sofia have a very good relationship... Is it (still?) true?

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics

Imo MC is smart and tries to be friends with everyone. It's in her insterest. If not royals wouldnt use her brand or be invited. Meanwhile Letizia goes nowhere. And when she goes its like she is an outsider.

Supposedly Sofia helped Felipe marry Leti. JC was 100% against. Felipe is completely a mummy's boy. So just karma for Sofia. No pity on my side.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: HRHOlya on April 03, 2018, 08:58:33 pm
MC's invite is guaranteed to many things, but yeah people do use her kids's brand and line a lot, though I suspect that's also a case where they both do it because it benefits them both (MC as entrepeneur and the person flogging the stuff on social media etc). MC and her sisters also have tonnes of mud sticking to them about treating staff terribly and behaving like they're above those who serve them (baristas at Starbucks as example). Nothing will make me warm towards the Miller sisters and their offspring (Olympia seems as horrid as her mother!).
Could be that MC changed tactics when she noticed that what she had going back in the day when she married Pavlos wasn't working...

That's also what I heard, Sofia was supportive of Leti, JC never liked her. Did Leti cut off her hair then when she became queen as some sort of liberating protest thing? I'll admit I don't know much about how well she's accepted by others though :spy:

PS In any case, MC doesn't have that much to deal with Sofia anyway, so I don't know why she had to loosen her lips. Sofia is her aunt in law and they don't seem close, so I don't get MC commenting at all.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: Alexandrine on April 03, 2018, 09:07:15 pm
^ I disagree. They are way closer than you think. MC likes to be with Pavlos family and the family must like her because $$. Sofia is close to her siblings and has been living for years in London. Now that her brother has move to Greece she has done the same. Sofia may see more MC children than her own grandaughters.

The difference to me is that apart that MC has no role whatsoever is thay she may be entitled but Leti seems completely unstable.

Title: Re: King Felipe and Queen Letizia: News & Pics
Post by: HRHOlya on April 03, 2018, 09:12:15 pm
^ I guess you are very right. And yeah, MC's money bought her in nicely, her behaviour was off putting, guess that may be smoothed over by now, esp thanks to her dosh.
Seems Sofia has lived a pretty independent life for ages, I am just quite surprised that she'd move so far away from Spain (namely what I mean, so far away from her kids and grandkids).

Whatever happened and whatever is the truth, I don't think it was MC's place to comment, esp as it is family and so public. MC wasn't there anyway and doesn't really know what happened either, pretty nasty of her imo.

Seems like little Sofia fussed and shook off her granny's hand, I think the kids were fussy and that may have created the "situation" and it might come across as much worse than it really was :dontknow:
I'll also add that I don't know much about them and their dynamic as family and the gossip that's around, so I might be well off. :sigh:

If you check the start of the video Leti is going back and forward so they cannot do the photo. Then in the next video is like she is cleaning where Sofia touched.

The 'defenders' are saying that she behaved badly because she is not ok with Sofia having a relationship with Cristina and helping her...

Whether this incident was just a momentary thing about a girl not wanting to be touched or evidence of longstanding tensions between Sofia and Leti (whether over Cristina or whatever) I don't think MC has exactly improved things by tweeting about it. Whatever the Greek royals think or don't think about Letizia, I don't think it was MC's place as Sofia's niece by marriage to comment publicly on it.

Leti and her family (her mom mostly) are raising the two girls as Ortiz Rocasolano the girls are not of Bourbon... I've said this many times in the past.
The girls in this case Leonor is raised how her mother & grandmother how to be like what a "princess is" when they haven't a clue.
MC knows what is going on & this is her family that she has every right to comment on. Even the Spaniard aristocracy knew what Leti is and they have the same negative feeling to her same with Felipe friends they don't like her neither.

Trouble with the monarch-in-law? Astonishing footage shows 'tense scene' between Letizia of Spain and Queen Sofia during Easter service

Footage appears to show a 'tense' moment between the two Spanish royals
The footage was taken during Easter Mass at Palma Cathedral in Mallorca
Princess Leonor appears to shove her mother and grandmother's hands off her as they both try to take her hand on the way out of the service

^Agree, at 12 she knows her own mind, and possibly thinks it "babyish" to be held like that in public.  Nearly a teenager, and probably prefers to be left alone.  In many ways she has had to grow up fast and learn about being in the public eye becuase of the situation she was born into, so maybe that also makes her feel a little more grown up than a lot of 12 year olds.  A big fuss about nothing IMO, nobody looked cranky or unpleasant.  Maybe she is a very hormonal pre-teen, who knows.  Certainly don´t think it should have been spread across the media like this.  Feel quite sorry for the poor kid.

Then you haven't seen how Letizia treats them because it's as if they were 4. Btw they were ok with doing the photo until the mother came.

For ex here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM3TopGzO5Y I couldn't find the second part where the president of the gorvenment and her husband are looking at them like wtf  ???

To understand the reaction to this try to think that Sofia is closest thing we have to QEII. So Sofia >>>>>> Letizia. Some defend her but not many. And journos are telling new things about her.

Also one of Leti's friend that is also a journo says that she is very worried and hurt... ok She says that Leti is also very worried about the image of her kids and who gets close to her.. OK...And that she is not someone who has been born to this.... LOL If she cannot do her job she should be fired then.

It looks as tho Leti put her hands on the girl's hair and Sofia pushed Leti away.  It reminds me of when Mary of Denmark's twins were babies and Mary reached over to touch the baby the Queen was holding, and the Queen swatted Mary's hand away.  Definitely some message being put out. . . .

At the end in the instagram link above, they are leaving and Sofia kisses Leonore and they are all making happy.

Leonor (or Sofia? I can never keep the two sisters apart :shy: doesn't help that the younger one -S- seems to be taller than the older one -L-) has swatted her grandmother's hand away twice though. I've read that Sofia has a "death grip" on her granddaughters, might be the kid's sick of it, seems like the kid has swatted off unwanted attention of both, grandmother and mother.

Ok first of all Im biased in the sense I dont like Leti, second Ive been following these two for as many years as the cambs.

This is not the firat time it happens. Sofia and Letizia had had fights in public in the past. More obvious or less obvious. Especially since Leti is queen she likes to do her thing and ignore her mil.

So the interesting thing is that they wanted this moment to be known and that journos start saying between lines things. This more or less happened in 2013 when Felipe and her had a big crisis and some of us thought divorce may happen. It didnt. This time may be quite similar in that sense. That it could be the beginning of the end of her but Felipe must think she may be worse outside his influence and cause even a bigger crisis so who knows.

Even JC supposedly said in that moment to Felipe something like I hope he can have calm moment in the future talking about divorce.

I intensely dislike Letizia. What she's done is despicable and the attitude her daughter Leonor had, doesn't exactly compliment the upbringing she's alledegly been given. She also wiped Leonor's forehead after Queen Sofia gave her a kiss. In my opinion this would be as bad as Harry or William throwing their arms away from Queen Elizabeth or from the Duke of Edimbrugh. As bad as Kate stopping the press from taking a picture of them with the Queen, Prince Phillip or Charles, a photo any of these three people wish being taken and wiping her child's forehead after they've been given a kiss by any of the former. It's despicable, classless, rude and sets a very bad exemple. It allows and enables Leonor to have a terrible attitude.    Letizia is alledgely worried about her daughter's image, well acting like this and allowing Leonor to aggressively remove her grandmother's hand from her shoulder is a sure path to criticism. Letizia is mad that Queen Sofía invited her daugthers (even Cristina) to a mass to honour the anniversary of the passing of King Juan Carlos' father, the Count of Barcelona. Who the heck is Letizia to allow or think she has any right to agree that a grandaugther, a princess of the blood, honours her grandfather?

I'm with Marie-Chantal on this one, Letizia's shown her true face. She's vulgar. There's rumours that Felipe and Letizia aren't getting along and a divorce might be coming.

She deserves all of them and like we say in Portugal, she needed a lot more, and its a shame all the boos than fell on the floor (this means all that were not given)!

I hope there is a divorce and I hope Letizia gets little in the settlement.
I am afraid that Letizia out of the palace will be a danger! Se can be more dangerous than Diana was! She was friends and connections there! The only way to get that is making her sign that if she opens her mouth she loses all the money

^That pink dress is pretty but appears too tight up top. Not a fan of the outfit for the 2nd day.

Darn, I'm an American and I didn't know that Trump was hosting King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

Letizia looks good in pink. I miss sleeves in dresses, though, it looks unprofessional without them.

^ Both ladies look good, I agree on the sleeves, but tbh the no-sleeves look looks good on Melania, she has a bit more flesh and looks in the area more attractive than Letizia...

Not to spiral this into politics, but I have the impression that maybe media isn't reporting on this unless Trump sets a foot wrong, and him pouting would off-set many channels and they'd report that and sweep under the rug that it was a state visit by the Spanish crown.
Then again I don't know how closely you follow media, you might simply not follow too closely and it's easy to miss things then..

^ and ^^ Agree with both of you about sleeves with dresses.  I hope they'll come back someday!
I'm American and hadn't heard about this visit either.  I think you've got it right HRHOlya.  The media won't report unless Trump makes a mistake.  We also have a lot going on in politics and governing these days, so it's easy to skip reporting on this.

^ & ^^
I follow politics everyday, because it's just as entertaining as the BRF lately, but the American media's focus has been the whole "Trump is separating children from their parents at the Mexican border" for the past two days and no one, not CNN, Fox News or MSNBC has mentioned the King of Spain's visit.

^ That's shameful. I *despise* how media focuses on his gaffes and has the gaffes overshadow literally everything else (and makes gaffes even out of non-gaffes!): agendas of meetings, summits, wtf actually happens, state visits, literally everything in favour of gossipy trash talking Trump. Media's objectivity (if it ever existed - I daresay it never did) is totally out of the window, particularly when it comes to Trump. Trump has just to look as if he's about to set his toe wrong, never mind his foot, and media pounces like starved vultures. I wish they'd concentrate more on what's really important. These days I can't even watch a sitcom without incessant Trump mentions or political messages being sent all day  :ick: I'm just glad they're not (i.e. have stopped) besmirching Melania (anymore).

Btw just to clarify, I feel like I have to, I agree sleeves would look better, just like technically open toed shoes are a no-no in "polite society" and are against many dress codes (in work places, too, as again, seen as "inappropriate") so are sleeveless anything, but imo Melania carries the look well and pulls it off as opposed to Letizia, who's too skinny imo for her to work this look out on this occasion.
Otherwise I like esp the colours on Leti. Felipe looks good as usual, and Trump would look better if he'd buttoned his blazer.
I dislike Melania's blow dry though, that forward fringe. Imo her hair would look much better if the fringe part would be blow dried to the side or back, like it usually is, I've never seen the front part blow dried like that on anyone else.

^So let me get this straight: You think it's shameful that the media is covering an international human rights situation that is taking place on our soil and involves children, some of which are toddlers and infants, rather than tea with a head of state?

And before any of you try to come at me, I'm very involved in the court system so I am very aware of what I'm talking about, and not going off sound bits from one or a handful of media outlets.

^^ I agree that Melania looks much better with her sleeveless look than Letizia does.  Part of the reason for me is that Melania's dress has more material on the shoulder that comes closer to the arm than Letizia's does.  As you said, Letizia is very skinny and would probably not look as good in a dress like the one Melania is wearing.

^^ No, I didn't mean that one at all nor did I imply to that. That one is beyond reprehensible, and the fact that small children, or any children - regardless of age, are separated from their parents is sickening and needs to be addressed asap and with all seriousness. That this happened at all is frankly stupefying. Trump and his administration, as well as government officials, fck up big time (all the time), no question about that. And these situations must be addressed & dealt with. This is imo as true as what I said earlier on media and Trump.

^ Exactly!

Spanish royal ramblers: Spain's Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor take in the scenery and stretch their legs as they mark 100 years since the creation of the Picos de Europa National Park

Leonor, Princess of Asturias, the older of the two princesses at 12-years-old, bears the name of the region
She joined her sister heir presumptive Infanta Sofía and her parents King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia
The royals looked ultra-casual as they rambled around the rugged area in northern Spain known for hiking
