Monarch of the Glen: This astonishing photo of the Queen was taken at her beloved Balmoral and marks the 60th anniversary of her Coronation. Robert Hardman tells the behind-the-scenes story

The face is the most familiar on the planet, reproduced on more coins, notes and stamps than any human likeness in history. But it is safe to say that we have never seen Her Majesty the Queen pictured quite like this. Not only is she in the full and elaborate regalia of her most exclusive order of chivalry but she is standing in the middle of nowhere.

No trick photography has taken place. There has been no digital enhancement by some special effects boffin. This spectacular image of the Sovereign – published in Weekend for the very first time – really is the Queen, standing next to a remote stream called Gelder Burn on her Balmoral Estate.

She is dressed in the green velvet mantle of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, the Scottish counterpart to England’s Order of the Garter. From her shoulders, held by white satin ties, hangs the Collar of the Order made of golden thistles and rue sprigs, from which, in turn, hangs a tiny St Andrew and his saltire cross.

I think this will be more pretty than the (J) celebrations but they are already starting with Lazy Middleton. Are the press going to make it all about her like the Jubilee, shameful.I read people were complaining that again they were going to get days off with no pay.

This will be Kate's first major event in Westminster since her wedding.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/may/26/britain-monarchy-reactionary-past
Quote
These are bad times for republicans. The last three years have been full of royal pageantry – an invocation of a reactionary past where a pretty duchess who has done nothing but marry and conceive is called the face of modern femininity. Elites harden and grow more wealthy and remote, watching the jubilee flotilla from their private perches, either bought or lobbied for. The alienation of elected politicians from voters makes the very air seem dangerous. That Maxima, the new queen of Holland, was crowned last month wearing what looked like the Miss World crown is the only amusing thing about this monarchical resurgence. But aristocrats know they have to endure being laughed at, and I do not think they mind. The benefits are obvious to them.

The royal wedding and the diamond jubilee were, respectively, a drunken "fairytale", and a thank-you so overwrought it gave Elizabeth II's husband cystitis – ladies and gentleman of the press, prepare your headlines. The anniversary of the coronation is more fascinating than either, because it exposes the most ancient roots of monarchy, a childlike need for gods and intercession, when I hoped we had done with both.

The film of the coronation service was re-released in cinemas last year. I sat in the darkness and watched it. I was riveted neither by the peers and their ladies, shouting allegiance in furs, nor by the young Princess Margaret's almost pornographic beauty and obvious unhappiness. It was the monarch's status as holy intercessor between God and commoner; as sacrificial victim; as human font. (As jewellery model?) On Coronation Day the Times wrote: "The Queen stands for the soul as well as the body of the Commonwealth. In her is incarnate ... the whole of society ... she represents the life of her people." Does she? Does she really? And can we not do better?

Perhaps because the answer is so obviously yes, or because the palace PR professionals think a third year of pomp in a recession would be vulgar, this particular anniversary is fairly downbeat. There will be a service at Westminster Abbey, and a Coronation festival in the grounds of Buckingham Palace to advertise the wares of royal warrant holders, because the most popular apology for monarchy these days is that it "sells Britain" – yes it does, and as what?
Quote
This will be nothing to the anniversary coverage of the Tory press, which, as the death of Margaret Thatcher demonstrated, loves nothing better than a demi-god – except perhaps two demi-gods. Last Thursday the Telegraph noted that the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall tried to fly to Hay-on-Wye to open the literary festival, but their helicopter broke. So they drove there in a car, and this, according to the Telegraph, was miraculous.

It is not so much what monarchy does that offends me, but what it does not do. It does not tell us that we are free and equal, and that any child born can do anything; in this, it is far more reactionary than Christianity. Instead it tells us, as it always has, that our places in society are ordained by an invisible God, and we should know them. If she is above, we can only be below – is this why conservatives adore it, it being so like a profitable business? And, to distract us, there is old patriotic nonsense: reach for the stars, children, and ignore the mud, even as it chokes you. All this will be remembered on Sunday.

^ The Guardian is so based ...they are jealous that among British politicians they don't have a "Liz" or "Harry" they have no one to promote and have 0 valid arguments against The Monarchy so they are reduced to whine about it writing articles full of vitriol ...

Queen's new portrait dubbed 'hideous,' 'like a bloke wearing a wig'

In honor of the sixtieth anniversary of her coronation, the British Royal Mail decided to create a series of stamps featuring pictures of Queen Elizabeth II.

While most of them were previous paintings of the Queen from other eras of her life, it’s the new addition the group – a painting by Nicky Philipps – that’s creating plenty of controversy.

The portrait, which shows Her Majesty in regal dark-blue robes surrounded by some of her beloved corgis, has been almost universally panned by critics.

Tom Sykes called it “hideous” and “a distinctly second-class effort" in a post on The Daily Beat's "The Royalist" blog

It is unknown at this time what the royals will wear, but the realistic choices will be either full gowns with tiaras and crown jewels, or the more restrained fashions such as day suits worn to regular engagements.

The Queen is marking the 60th anniversary of her Coronation on Sunday.

To celebrate, BBC Parliament will for the first time broadcast a digitally re-mastered version of the original black-and-white televised film footage of the event from 2 June 1953.

The footage has been restored by BBC Studios and Post Production's Digital Media Services team, who worked from the original 45 reels of negative black-and-white film.

Jonathan Wood, who led the restoration effort, explained to Nicholas Witchell how it was done.

You can watch The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on BBC Parliament from 1010 BST on Sunday 2 June.

Quote
Prince Philip today defied illness to be at the Queen’s side for the service to mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation.

Just as he did in 1953, the Duke of Edinburgh served as Her Majesty’s “liege man of life and limb” at Westminster Abbey for one of the biggest royal turnouts since the Diamond Jubilee.

Philip, who turns 92 on Monday, caused concern when he pulled out of a palace gala reception with the Queen at the last minute last night after falling unwell. No details of his illness were given.

One senior source told The London Evening Standard: “He was feeling under the weather last night and didn’t want to take any chances.

“He doesn’t want a fuss, but wanted to make sure he was fit for today. There is no way the Duke was going to miss this service, no matter what anyone said,” the source added.

On the day of the coronation itself there were 8,200 guests, but today 2,000 were inside.

Kate looks awful today, I'm sorry but she does. Even if she is truly pregnant it doesn't excuse how haggard and unhealthy (particularly in the face) she looks. William looks better than usual. And Harry looks hot as always.  :flirt:

Beatrice and Eugenie both look lovely. Beatrice especially, she looks so regal and sophisticated. I don't know if Andrew invested in new stylists and make-up artists but if he has then it's working!

And of course the Queen looks fantastic.

Louise also stands out, she looks so cute!

Ok my fashion review:

The Queen's dress is weird with those panels. The hat with the flowers on one side looks cheap. Compared to last year's outfits for the jubilee this is one of the worst.

I like Camilla's hat although it may be a tad too big. But she needs a better bra!

William and Kate look like the outsiders in the family. Zara greets William like she hasn't seen him in a while, and he looks like he could care less. Poor Harry he's now stuck sitting beside Kate at all these things.

The family as a whole looks happy, but WK seems to bring a black hole on the whole thing.   :sigh:

The coat is super glam but I may not have mixed the hat with feathers will all that fake diamond jewellery. Though I love that she experiments and has fun while remaining appropriate for the event.

Eugenie is a so so. She should forget about zippers.

Sophie looks like she is going nude under her dress http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/lady-louise-windsor-and-sophie-rhys-jones-countess-of-news-photo/169901691  :-X Maybe for a garden party but too much for a church service.

The Duchess of Gloucester wears a nice coat but maybe too wintery  :dontknow: http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/birgitte-duchess-of-gloucester-attends-a-service-marking-news-photo/169901869 while the D of Kent looks lovely in pink http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/katherine-duchess-of-kent-and-prince-edward-duke-of-kent-news-photo/169901782

I don't like Marie Christine blue suit http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/prince-michael-of-kent-and-princess-michael-of-kent-attend-news-photo/169902294

Love the fashion review.

What was Kate thinking exiting the car that way? Does she ever look down before she gets out of a vehicle to see what the bottom of her skirt of dress is doing? Geez the tart never leaves her. Can she just one time not have an upskirt or up-thigh shot.  :-

Here's my thoughts on today having watched it on TV...

Kate - skirt too short as usual, heels too high, looks remarkably agile for an 8mth pregnant woman. Totally over the top. She looks like she is acting every time she is in public. 'Oh I better look around like I am REALLY interested... oh I better look like I am chatting to the relations... oh better smile now...' All very fake. I felt that the other royals were eyeing her with suspicion or like they were thinking 'What is she doing now?!'

William and Harry - I thought both looked very serious today, Harry in particular. They didn't seem overly interested in all Kate's showy behaviour.

Beatrice, Eugenie, Sophie - all looked very pretty and natural, and genuinely happy.

Prince Philip - looking very doddery, I am not sure there are many years left in him.

The Queen - as usual, wonderful twinkly smile when she gives them - her face in repose has become very Victorian, with the downturned mouth. However I thought she was moved by the occasion. I liked her outfit, it looked regal and elegant. I still don't think she is well, not that they will share any of that with us!

Lady Louise - I know I am going to get stamped on for this because the poor child can't help it.... but I think she is a very plain little girl. Huge Charles-like ears, lazy eye, gappy teeth. Beautiful hair though. I hope she grows out of these problems or they get them fixed, because she is going to get some serious ribbing when she is older if they don't (just think of all the Charlie Big Ears comments over the years... combine that with gappy teeth and crossed eyes... see what I mean?)

WK always manages to look cheap. She wears poorly made dresses by big name designers that cost a bomb, teaming them with silly high heels which makes them even shorter. She's arrogant enough to think she can do her own make up, which is hard and unflattering. Once she's at the event she ends up grinning like a deranged hyena, trying to flirt with PH and generally behaving inappropriately, which is met with coldness by everyone else.

Love Bea's outfit. As for WK , I actually think she lose some weight especially around her face. I don't expect her to be big but please eat something... She must be hot as hell wearing a lace dress and ugly jacket...

The royal family today, June 4, gathered for the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and for the first time since that day in 1952, St Edward’s Crown was in public. Throughout the service, which featured about 2,000 guests, the crown rested on the High Alter. The Dean, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, described the presence of the priceless crown in the Abbey as “a powerful symbol of the moment of Coronation.” St Edward’s Crown, which has 444 precious stones and weighs a heavy 5lbs, is kept in the Tower of London for safekeeping. The crown is so heavy, in fact, that the Queen left the Abbey following her coronation in the Imperial State Crown because it is much lighter. Prince Charles, in a televised program for the Diamond Jubilee, joked that as a child he remembers the Queen walking around the Palace even giving the children baths while wearing it to get used to the weight.

Why can't a woman in her position simply keep her dresses down and have them weighted as well as exit cars properly. Today she reminded me of someone like Lindsay Lohan.

the commentors in the DMail were asking the paper how they could say she was elegant, some called Kate vulgar?

Quote

 Really, DM? "Elegant: Despite being only a month away from giving birth, the Duchess of Cambridge easily climbs out of her Land Rover as she attended the Queen's special service" That picture shows someone quite inelegantly exiting a vehicle with upper thighs in full view, unless she is turning the Windsors into A Chorus Line, that is hardly an elegant arrival at Church. if she cannot exit cars gracefully in a skirt perhaps she should give pants, other than skinny jeans, a try once in a while. Flashing bum and upper thighs every time she is out in public is hardly elegant... Unless you were giving sarcasm a try?

The bimbo doing whet she does best, show her legs. She can´t be any more vulgar!

That picture looks like that one annoying child in class who does anything for attention while the rest of the class looks down at their books just ignoring him or her.The Queen should have made Wimpy and Lazy stay home and tell the press  not to even mention why they weren't there looney face IMO_ruins everything anyways. For a happy coronation celebration HM has a pensive look on her face and it looks more like a funeral.I wonder if Mr.Ears and the ex Mistress were saying to themselves when is the Queen going to be gone already.

Amazing how snotty the Brits can get; given the condition of their country you would think they would be more humble.

I think I should be more snappish about the Windsors; the English know how to enjoy life, but the Windsors seem to depress things and make everything a miserable little martyrdom day in and day out. Look at how they whine all the time and look at how the Brits tend to enjoy life to the full.

Thanks Snokitty for posting that link. There was not one photo of Princess Anne in the DM and loads of Kate. Anne looks nice and whilst she a prickly character she is the Queen's only daughter.
