Title: What's the last movie you saw?
Post by: spookyboo on November 08, 2010, 11:58:10 pm
Thought we could talk about different movies we've seen and give them a rating.

How about this for a rating system your choice...

1/10 to 10/10
or
No lips = don't bother, waste of money

 :lips:= only if your desparate

:lips: :lips: = you just need to get out of the house

:lips: :lips: :lips: = was ok certainly not the best

:lips: :lips: :lips: :lips: = worth the price of admission

:lips: :lips: :lips: :lips: :lips:= everyone should see it, has Oscar written all over it!!!

:tehe: ok, I know the lips are a bit much... the other is easier... :blabla:

Last movie I saw was... it's been awhile...
I think it was either
Ondiene (sp?) w/Colin Farrell ( :hot:) which I would give a  :lips: :lips: :lips:
Or Twilight:Eclipse  :lips: :lips: :lips: :lips:

Ondine with, yet again, Colin Farrell (who's dating Rihanna - boo!)  Gorgeous footage of Ireland.

How was Gnomeo and Juliet, Gaeskhywalker?  It looks adorable in the adverts.

Gnomeo & Juliet, is really good. It has a lot of humour and the story of Shakespear is still recognizable.

Well, I didn't see this at a movie theater, but the last movie I watched was called "A Mother's Revenge" on Lifetime. I don't watch a lot of Lifetime movies, but I have to say that this one was very good, in my opinion. It was about a Mother who shot her 12 yr old daughters rapist in court after he was acquitted for her the crime.

This demonstrates that when people like me, we're against the death penalty and life imprisonment, we are not defending the criminals, but we are defending ourselves. Good movie, I recommend.

Last episode of Mildred Pierce on HBO.  If you are an avid fan of classic movies, shoot yourself in the head before watching this remake.  Almost as bad as the new Upstairs/Downstairs.  Totally sucked and I don't use those words very often.

Maybe I'm too big a fan of BBC's Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett, but I almost threw my shoe at the new version and I love R. Downey, Jr.  Oddly, I watched The King's Speech again last night and was shocked to find myself not liking it as much the second time around.  I'm still trying to figure that one out.  Too many long gazes at the end and not enough about the Queen Mum and I thought there was more of that before.  They didn't use HBC enough or something.

A really, really creepy movie showing how the Beale women ended up in the destroyed Grey Gardens; relatives of Jackie O. Why aren't movies like this done in Hollywood instead of on HBO? It's like Showtime and HBO are doing movies that Hollywood should be doing.

I don't know, KF, but HWood seems to like to deal with aliens and cars blowing up.  I watched Grey Gardens last year on HBO and loved it.  Very well done.  Good casting, good acting.  I, too, highly recommend it.  It's creepy and some of it is untrue, which bugged me (Jackie was uber-generous to those two).  But all in all, spooky, true story stuff that is astonishing and sometimes painful to watch.  I couldn't take my eyes off of it.

Well, not a movie, but I just finished watching the mini-series on the Kennedys with Katie Holmes et al. I admit that I really liked it overall; I couldn't care less if it wasn't well received. Australians have a fascination with the Kennedys, especially this Australian. I think the Kennedys are far more interesting than royals.  :KEZZA:

My mother was distraught though at the assassination of the two brothers, she was crying.  :there:

It was really well acted, as it's not easy to pull off characters who have lived so large in the public consciousness. I was very impressed, though I could see that it was a bit geared toward a certain "agenda" for want of a better term.

I think Jackie understood Edith (or thought she did) and she might have done it for the sake of PR, but I can't blame the rest of the family for disowning them because they were enmeshed in their own psychosis that could easily drag people in. It was chilling to watch not just how Edith imprisoned her daughter, but how Little Edie succumed and showed signs of being just as insane as her mother (referring ot the guys at the country club as 'dull' and also refusing to take the job her father offered, which would have supported her until her big break). Little Edie was just as impratical and unrealistic as her mother and it was kind of heartbreaking seeing her father age as he lost his daughter as well as his wife to their insanity.

Then there was the spite that Little Edie showed to Jackie when she (Jackie) visited and how even after decades, Little Edie hadn't moved on from her infatuation with Joe Kennedy Jr. and heartbreak from the former Secretary of the Interior. Chills.

^ Not better than the first one, but still good.

New Kids: Nitro  :lips: :lips:  :lips: New Kids Turbo was so much better, but it was okay.
For those who are wondering who New Kids are. It's about a group of Brabanders (The part of the Netherlands where I came from), they are aso's as we call them (rude in their behaviour) and are very popular in The Netherlands.

W.E.

I thought it was an interesting movie the focus seemed to be more on the modern day relationship of Wally than on Wallis and Edward. I think it has only been slated so much because Madonna directed it  :sigh:

Iron lady  :lips: :lips: :lips: :lips: (Meryl soo deserved the bafta and the oscar for leading actress!)
The artist  :lips: :lips: :lips: (Uggy the dog is super cute)

I'm off to watch 'Extremely loud, Incredibility close' this evening
....

Just got back from the cinema and honestly....I cried the whole bloody time during the movie!
It's soo beautiful but soo sad to see that boy who is trying desperately to make logical sense of a situation that will never ever make sense to anyone! :bye: :sob:
Best moment of the movie: the letter he writes to all the Black's at the end of the search, and their reaction to it.
I cried bucket's over it (and I'm still teary eyed at the moment)
But the movie get's  :lips: :lips: :lips: :lips:
The subtitle of the movie says it all: This is not a movie about 9/11 it's about all the other day's after.

I was told to read the book fist, because there are many things not mentioned in the movie which can help you paint a better picture about the whole storyline, so I would recommend you to read the book first, it is quite good.

TED, starring Mark Wahlberg funny, stupid too but hilarious in most parts (my nephews wanted to see it) it was a bit crude in some points too, NOT for children.

^ Well, duh, it's rated R. Parents who take their young children (under 15) to see rated R movies are terrible.   Maybe in your own home, where you can FF through inappropriate parts, if they're in the 12-14 range, but that's it. No little 8-year-olds should ever be in there!

I saw SAVAGES over the weekend, very graphic, very brutal scenes in the movie. Reminded me a bit of Scarface as far as drug war scenes. Good acting but it's violent, drug dealers, mexico, LA drug dealing, It seems a guys movie, a guy who likes shoot-em-ups and graphic violence.

I've seen her in three films she has done and I actually think she's a good actress and still learning, building herself. She's pretty good, but there is room for growth. I think that she is in the building process of her "film" career, she seems to be growing, working in films with good director's , trying to build up her resume' in films.

I think this will definately help her get more roles offered to her from big name directors in the future.

The King's Speech - an inspiring movie about an equally inspiring, intelligent, courageous and fearless King George VI. It resonated with me (I have a slight speech impediment myself. Just replace the "r" with a "w" and you get the idea. Sort of like how Barbara Walters or Jessica Savitch spoke) and made me teary-eyed and cheer too. Awesome movie. 10/10.  :)

Lincoln- another movie about an awesome leader (he had a quiet confidence) during yet another tumultuous time in history. 9/10.

Man of Steel.  Great movie.  All the actors were absolutely excellent.  Henry Cavill was perfect, and the guy who played the villain-General Zad-was great.  Probably one of the scariest villains I've seen and not scary in the conventional sense.  Even Russell Crowe was excellent. I actually didn't see Russell Crowe in the character that he played.

I just saw a series of movies about 'friends' who end up murdering the firend who seemingly has it all

A Killer Among Friends (A.K.A. Friends for Life)
Synopsis: Academy Award® winner* Patty Duke searches for her daughter’s killer in this shocking true story, costarring Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Loretta Swit. A popular 17-year-old girl, Jenny Monroe (Thiessen) is found beaten, tortured and drowned in a creek. Her best friend, Ellen Holloway (Margaret Welsh), swears to find the killer, providing moral support to Jenny’s mother, Jean (Duke). Moving into the Monroe family home, Ellen becomes like a daughter, helping Jean search for a killer who continues to hide in plain sight. Originally airing on CBS-TV on December 8, 1992, A Killer Among Friends was based on the 1985 murder of Missy Avila, whose killers were eventually convicted of second-degree murder. Sentenced to 15 years-to-life, one was released after serving 21 years, while the other remains in state prison.

Death of a Cheerleader: TV Movie
Synopsis: http://www.amazon.com/Death-Cheerleader-Movie-Stories-Collection/dp/B000CS45H4/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in

Basically it was about this psycho who kills this cheerleader who refused to be her friend and then enjoyed six months of improved social status until the cops make it clear that she fit the profile of the killer. After the weekend she turns herself in.

Totally biased and in favor of the crazy killer. I ave no idea how anyone can justify murdering a 15 year old popular student just because of rejection.

I am sick of these murdering maniacs who do these horrific things and then demand that we feel sorry for their murdering selves.

It's teaching me a lot about how completely vicious some women are and just how plain insane it is for the murderers to get away with it. I would have fried each and every single one of them in the electric chair and flipped the switch myself.

Romantics Anonymous (French film). It's cute, quirky and my boyfriend fell asleep in the middle of it.  lol

Synopsis: What happens when a man and a woman share a common passion? They fall in love. And this is what happens to Jean-René, the boss of a small chocolate factory, and Angélique, a gifted chocolate maker he has just hired.

Finally getting around to American Sniper w/Bradley Cooper.  The biographical tale of a Navy Seal sniper.

One of my on-again-off-again sort of man who is a date who is also a friend is also a Navy Seal.  One of the nicest men you'd ever want to meet when it's a social event or if you want to jump in and play with his dolphins.  Highly educated, speaks 5 languages, brilliant man.  And tlk about buff!  It was his job to train the dolphins to carry bombs and other military hardware to submarines or battleships.  He served two tours of duty and, yes, killed human beings as well.  "Gotta multi-task!" he has been known to say.

For me, probably one of the least likely to be on a 'boyfriend' list.  He, and his fellow Seals carry with them a dark side the likes of which I have never witnessed in any other.  They're killing machines and live in a shadow world that no one outside of their training can ever understand.  Well, I couldn't, anyway.

My Navy Seal 'boyfriend' sort of and I are spending NYE together this year.  He had to re-sign up and just got back from another training mission (that is top secret so I know nothing) so he's off alcohol, tobacco and has his blood drawn every single day by the military to make sure he is in optimal physical condition so I thought he'd be good to have around during the craziness of New Year's Eve in San Diego.  To be honest, the whole thing makes me feel safe yet nervous all at the same time.  Somebody ALWAYS recognizes him as a Seal and something happens - not always good.  I've seen him calmly grab a man's head and smash it against a bar top and toss him to the floor without batting an eyelash.  Good times!!!!!

Not sure what the point of this stream of consciousness is all about.  The movie, otoh, is fantastic and quite realistic, or so he says.  We do this.  We create these people.  Or do they want to be created?  Hm.

As a virtually non tv/movie person I don´t see many of them.  My last film was Mamma Mia (I know, sad...)  whilst on holiday in Spain.  Got misled into believing the film was in English - uh uh, nope, goold old Spanish.  It was okay but the subtitles did my head in.  I did enjoy it in English on a dvd a few months later, but then mainly I think because I like Abba music, I fidn it quite catchy.  My husband watches all the films etc (on tv) and loves them, I call him ole square eyes.  I would rather read a book.

^Being a Californian essentially, I'm a movie fanatic.  In fact, if any of you are ever on a trivia show and the million dollar question is about movies, call me.  Except horror movies like Texas Chainsaw stuff.

In fact, in the last couple of days, I've seen 3 movies.  Star Wars (original), Scrooge (1935 version) and Witness For The Prosecution (GREAT movie).

Or it is in certain people, recognized, and they are trained into it these machines?  In any case, Yooper, you are one interesting lady.

In the past few months I've enjoyed:

Learning to Drive and The Martian (setting aside scientific impossibilities like when watching Gravity). Any movie with Chiwetel Ejiofor gets a chance from me.

The documentary SEAL Dog (based on the book) was interesting, and looking forward to the new season of Million Dollar American Princesses coming to Smithsonian in January.

Missed Suffragette in the theater so have to wait until that is released for home viewing.

^Amazon has it but that's in the US.  It, I think, is a more realistic take on the novel, as close as Hollywood can get anyway and Redford is gorgeous in it.  Loved the DiCaprio rendition, tho, too.  Not as good a Nick Carroway as Redford nor Daisy but beautiful movie.

Oh!  It's on YouTube!

Fannie's Last Supper.  It's on Netflix now.

If you are a fan of Downton Abbey or love cooking or Victorian history, this is a don't-miss.  A group of chefs recreated the final meal that Fannie Farmer had in her last cook book in 1896.  The chefs had to use the same stoves, foods and materials that were used at that time.  A 12-course meal that took them forever that was basic every day cooking in its day.  Fascinating.

The Light Between Oceans, I really like Alicia Vikander's acting and of course the brilliant Rachel Weisz but I felt the movie sometimes pulled too much on the heartstrings, it called too much to feelings, so much so sometimes you'd become sort of unsensitive to what was happening.

"Allied" w/Brad Pitt.  It's no "Casablanca" but not too bad considering the crapfest that is HWood lately.  A few too many plot holes and Pitt's pretty wooden throughout.  Outstanding cinematography, tho.

Title: Re: What's the last movie you saw?

I just watched The Allied. I was shocked with Brad Pitts appearance and performance. He just seemed so oooold and almost bloated. He didn't seem like he connected with the character, role, or audience. He seemed almost ill so I hope he is well. Maybe he had a lot of bad going on in his personal life at the time. The movie was fair.

Gotta give a thumbs up to Hallmark Mysteries, for once.  They're usually all the same and with the same people but the Fixer Upper Mysteries movies with Jewel are refreshing, well crafted and Jewel is a surprisingly good actress.  Better than the pros, actually.  Nice, twisty plots.  Perfect for a rainy day/eve.  Not major brain exercise but cozy mystery stuff.

'Thor Ragnarok' :lips: :lips:  :lips: good movie that doesn't require you to think to much, good FX, but what is a bit annoying is that you have to watch other marvel movies like 'avengers' to get some to the puns. the relation between thor and hulk is rather funny and as usual there's an open ending so they can easily add another chapter to the tale.
'Justice Leage'  :lips: :lips: personally I prefer Marvel over DC  (DC-universe is a bit too grim for my taste sorry DC-fans :hide: but my bf is a big DC-fan sooo yeah! :June:) simple story: due to threat of big strong evil dude the hero's have work together, personalities clash but in the end good wins yadadya :wopedo:. Odd speech timing between the characters it was as if they were expecting a drumroll behind each funny line (some of which fell flat) fight scenes were good.

I saw both movies back to back so maybe that why i'm a little underwhelmed by them.

I have been binge watching movies from my local library...

Dear White People - the title says it all... holy moley I couldn't sit through this one. I forced myself for five minutes and that was more than enough for me! A definite no don't bother with this one!

Contracted - an Indie horror movie ... meh good but leaves you with the feeling did I just waste over an hour of my time watching this? It sucked me in but as I watched it I knew I had better things to do with my time...

Saudi Arabia- a documentary by PBS worth a look, but that warning it has some adult content

Atomic Blonde- loved it.

I like the foreign movies, too although they are hit and miss... fascinating to see the difference in styles of movie making from around the world...

I still haven't seen Murder on the Orient Express- was going to see it around holiday but didn't...

 In Cold Blood.

That family murder of the Cuttler family took place just a few miles from my grandmother’s home and she told the most interesting yet terrifying stories about how locked down all the towns nearby were.  People went in groups with police to get groceries, for instance.  Everybody suspected everybody.  That part of Kansas is about as gentle and kind a place as we make in the States.  Honest farming country.  No more.

Henry Cavill  :flirt: is now one of my faves and I can't believe I am saying this but I am now an Armie Hammer fan. :o after watching him in Free Fire with Cillian Murphy and now Uncle he has won me over and I didn't think he could. :tehe: And then I watched Bronson with Tom Hardy (another fave of mine) and it was a bizarre but good film. I'd actually like to revisit some 90s films or watch them for the 1st time, also some classics from the 50s etc. The nice clothes, toned down make-up and hair and somehow the lack of technology are refreshing. Also the whole internet setup in You've Got Mail!!! omg!! Memories!! So simple, but the best is the dial-up screeching and beeping!! In some terms it totally makes you appreciate modern comforts and commodities, like wifi :tehe:

I had a friend date with somebody I hadn't seen in 20 years and we went to see Ready Player One.  Neither of us are gamers, but we had a blast.  Lots of 80’s references for those who are into 80’s pop culture…or for those of us who lived it the first time.  ;)  I recommend it.

I am back to my music, book and writing binge so I am not watching many movies lately. I did watch one movie, Accident Man, with Mr Adkins himself and it was good. Now I want to watch the Undisputed movies... but no time in near future.... waah!

I saw 'A Quiet Place' a few days ago. Was good-but reminded me of "War of the Worlds' in a way.

My movie and television viewing is becoming almost nonexistent but I do want to see the movie MI: Fallout esp since my favourite Henry Cavill is in it. And Angela Bassett. She's simply gorgeous and is a good actress, too. She's looks fantastic in trailers. So if anyone does manage to see the movie later this month give the details esp on the above two actors and their performances.  :flower:

Adrift starring the amazing Shailene Woodley.

It’s based on a true story and Shailene is such a great actress, you can hardly take your eyes off her.

Helter Skelter.  Both (1976 & 2004 movies).  In prep for new DiCaprio movie based on the summer of 1969 Manson murders/terror.  Directed by Tarantino.

So far, the 1976 movie is the best, for me, and most realistic.  I visited as a kid out there that summer and the fear was everywhere.  Will never forget it.

Upcoming release info (don’t drop the ball, Tarantino):

The Mystery of Natalie Wood (free on YouTube)

Spoiler alert:  her death is still a mystery.

I didn’t know, tho, that she was Russian.  Or, at least her parents were.  Natasha was her real name and she spoke fluent Russian.  Also didn’t know Wagner was either bisexual or a frustrated homosexual.  Shows the messed up world of Hollywood very well and film is good quality.

What I think happened that night is that there was a fight with Wagner, she wanted off that boat, tried to get in dingy, missed, fell, drowned.  Excessive alcohol and boating do not mix.  But, I don’t see her doing that alone.  It goes against everything she believed in/was afraid of which, even drunk, would have held her instinctively back from going out solo.  So, I think Wagner played a part.

I just saw the new version, the first being in 1937, of A Star is Born. I wasn't expecting it to be so good, but it definitely was.
And Bradley Cooper can sing and act. I didn't think much of him before, thinking he was just a pretty face, but was very impressed with his performance in the film.
No, Lady Gaga cannot reach the heights of singing that Streisand could, but she sure didn't sing a bum note in the film.

Definitely worth watching and even paying to see.

Mindhunter.  David Fincher, Dir.(Zodiac, Se7en).  Super good if you like real crime stories.  Very dark and Fincher-perfect.  It takes place in the mid 1970s when the FBI first started understanding and classifying serial killers.  Also profiling really started.  They use the same killers at that time which was an epidemic, practically.  Son of Sam, Manson, Richard Speck, Co-ed Killer..

Interesting footnote.  My dr performed an emergency appendectomy on Richard Speck just weeks before he murdered all those nurses in Chicago.  Speck was on a ship coming through where I live in Michigan and would have died.  My dr never got over self-imposed guilt and drank heavily, then lost his license to practice and really drank himself to death over it.

Not a cheerful movie (series actually) but the best tv I’ve seen in a long time.  Netflix.

^I know.  Sad, right?  He was a great dr, too.  A first rate heart surgeon from some Ivy League college for heaven's sake so we were lucky to have him.  I was just a little kid with a heart murmur so I will never forget him nor when the murders happened.  I even kept my bed clean underneath in case I ever had to hide there (that was how one nurse survived).  Actually, I still do.

Anyway, Mindhunter is a riveting piece of film work but probably not for everyone.  It ain't pretty and definitely not for children ever.

^It sounds gruesome but I'm happy you made it and as a child it must have been particularly terrifying. Did they ever catch the sob? I hope they fried him.

Christopher Robin with Ewan McGregor.  Jim Cummings, voice of Winnie the Pooh.  Absolutely, completely charming.  Most heartwarming movie I've seen in a long time.
