^There is a good book: Sex, Drugs and Economics ;) It describes the economical theories with more "interesting" examples as a usual textbook you read in uni. lol  I would recommend it to every Business Administration student.

Blood and Chocolate (http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Chocolate-Annette-Curtis-Klause/dp/0440226686)  by Annette Curtis Klause.  My best friend worships the book!!!  I won't read anything with werewolves in it, and Harry Potter was the exception.

"Harmony" by POW

I'm not a fan of Prince Charles per se, but I've maintained an ongoing interest in environmental issues since I was a teenager. My son picked it out, without any help, as a gift for my birthday. ... I'll do a book review synopsis after I've finished the book, if anyone's interested. ...

'Now you know royalty' by Doug Lennox
It's a cool fun facts book about royalty and it explains a lot of things like: What is the civil list? or What is the Act of Settlement?
They focus mainly on Canada (the writer is Canadian) and how the RF and the commonwealth affected their history and how much it still affects modern life.
  good read!
BTW did you know that it was rumoured that queen Anne Boleyn had six fingers on her right hand? (one of the little fun fact from the book! :tehe:)

I'm in reading:

-Kitty Kelley's The Royals
which is banned for sale in the UK unabridged due to libel laws, includes details on their Nazi ties and German roots and how they sacrificed the Romanovs to save themselves, HM was conceived by artificial means, courtship of HM and PP which George VI was against, PP's visits to brothels and affairs, racism, and other uncomfortable things (don't know if they're true, but I'm about 20% through and it's interesting). review: http://www.salon.com/sept97/royalsb970917.html

-Anchee Min's Empress Orchid
Fictionalized autobiography of the last empress of China. Really good.

-Max Brooks' World War Z
An series of short stories of people who lived through a zombie apocalypse. Fun, but depressing in a weird way.

I devour books and have no attention span so those are the main ones I'm on right now. I'm totally bookmarking this thread for material later!

@Princess Alucard: I've heard good things about Alice Borchardt's Wolf series. She's Anne Rice's sister, but I don't know if their styles are similar. Never read them myself though, so I don't know how good they are...

The Botox Diaries - Avoid like the plague
Jewels - Danielle Steele - come on!  Enjoy. Beach read
The Year We Left Home - Jean Thompson (great book; bit depressing, so far and a bit hard to follow)
TV Writing Took Kit - because my script is coming together!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Rose for Mrs. Miniver  - for my Brit friends.  The bio of Greer Garson.  Charming read. I could read it again and again.

Just got back from an awesome sale at the bookstore.  Picked up Life & Times of Michael K by one of my favorite newer authors, JM Coetzee.  Also bought a book by -- this threw me -- the actor James Franco.  Between acting, being an author and getting his PhD in literature w/ a focus on the British Romantics, dude's living out all my dreams.  All he has to do now is appear in a musical and move to England.  He really should have been chosen to play Jeff Buckley in the upcoming biopic.  :(   He'd have captured his spirit, and that's what defines Jeff Buckley.

That sounds like a book I'd love, Gwendolyn, and I'm going to see if Kindle has it.

Right now I'm reading:

"It's All About The Dress"  (beach read - Vicky Tiel - can't put it down)
"Rules of Civility" Amour Towles (a certain taste)
"Prime Time"  Jane Fonda (Kinda good - preachy but she's right)
"Becoming Marie Antoinette" Juliet Grey (light, good read)
"The Long Night"  Steve Wick (not sure yet)
"Night"  Elie Wiesel (Don't miss)
"Don't Bite Your Tongue (parenting book for brat kids) Ruth Nemzoff

The Palace Diaries, twelve years with HRH Prince Charles by Sarah Goodall & Nicholas Monson
Hilarious little fluffy book. one of his ex-employees, A lady Clerk, tell's little anecdotes of her job at the palace and her personal life and how these two get mixed up some times.
It's very obvious she has more then just a little crush on our dear PC.  lol He can do almost no wrong in her eyes (even though she got sacked in the end)
The book made me smirk a lot, giggle a little and laugh out loud once or twice.
It gives you a unique POV from someone who is close enough to get the juicy inside palace stories and yet far enough so she doesn't get dragged in to the personal lives/fights of the royals.
It's a ideal book for train or plane, I read it on the Eurostar from London to Brussels and I wasn't bored once!

At home with the Queen by Brian Hoey
It's informative if you wanna know how the palace staff structures work,
But the writing style is not my cuppa tea, it read a bit like a odd guide to the job's inside the palace.
Not as revealing or funny as I hoped but I haven't finished it yet so it might get better.
But it gives you a good idea on what happens day to day in the palace.
Good for info not good for entertainment.

Hosea 6:3
3 know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going, as the morning, is certain, and he will come to us like the rain, as the spring rains that water the earth.

Knowing God, this is the greatest blessing that the human heart can get to feel, that Mackintosh series of books is very desirable, it can enter into the depths of the soul to bring you closer to Jesus. The Peace of the Lord Jesus.

Product Description
Genesis 1 - 15
Prologue: "I cannot suffer this Fourth Edition to go forth, without an expression of heartfelt thankfulness to the Lord for His goodness in making use of such a feeble instrumentality, for the profit of souls, and the spread of His own simple truth.
It is an unspeakable privilege to be permitted, in any small degree, to minister to the souls of those who are so precious to Christ. "Lovest thou me? Feed my sheep." Such were the touching words of the departing Shepherd; and, assuredly, when they fall powerfully upon the heart, they must rouse all the energies of one's moral being to carry out, in every possible way the gracious desire breathed therein. To gather and to feed the lambs and sheep of the flock of Christ, are the most exalted services in which any one can be engaged. Not a single honest effort put forth for the achievement of such noble ends, will be forgotten in that day "when the Chief Shepherd shall appear."
May God the Holy Ghost fill the heart, anoint the lips, and consecrate the pen of every servant of Christ, so that streams of pure and living truth may flow, in every direction, for the refreshment of all those who are on their way to glory." C.H.M.
Charles Henry Mackintosh (C.H.M.) was born in 1820 in Ireland. At a young age he came to read in J.N. Darby's Operations of the Spirit, "It is Christ's work for us, not His work in us, that gives us peace." For twenty-one years he was the editor of "Things New and Old."
Notes on the Penteteuch covers the first five books of the Old Testament, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

So, i got eight books in total, one of Jane Austen who I always love and two of Maeve Binchey (the others i haven't included here) but has anyone read any of Mauve Binchey's books?
She's really good. The one I'm reading now is called 'Quentins'.

The play is heralded, so go, go, go.  The movie has had mixed reviews and deservedly so.  I saw it and Spielberg stubbed his toe, I think.  Children will like it, but it lacks whatever magic he usually puts in to his masterpieces, for grownups.  I felt cheated and it was just too corny and schmaltzy for my taste.  Give me ET anytime over this.

As for books, I'm absolutely addicted to Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache murder series set in Quebec.  Very well written.

Flappers and Philosophers  by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Before that, I've tried reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (I'm trying to get into steampunk fiction) but I couldn't get past the first few pages.

well actually the book is a double crime combo thingy, second story is 'murder on the orient express'
I'm still reading 'the nile', at the moment so shht don't tell me the end! (haven't read any of AC's books up until now ...yes I know, it's a huge hole in my literature! :shy:)

I haven't read any AC books either!  :shy: Are all her books the stand-alone sort? I might read some of them one day, but I don't want a series or anything. I'm still a little burnt out from GRRM's series.

Yup all of them are printed in pocket form so they are not that expensive (I paid like 10 bucks per book)
They stand alone it's not a serie or any thing, every book is a different murder to solve.
AC has two mayor characters that solve her mystery: old ms Marple and PI Hercule Poirot.
She published like 60 books with those two in the lead alone! (I don't think they ever worked on a 'case' together tough..)
She published nearly 80 mystery and crime novels over the years, many of them were turned into movies at one point or another.
And I believe the TV show murder she wrote (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086765/) was influenced by AC novels (love that show BTW!)
It's a light read and I do enjoy the books very much.

Isn't The Mouse Trap still playing in London?  It's the longest running play ever, I believe, and one of AC's best.

I lovvvve Murder She Wrote.  I'll bet I could quote, verbatim, every line of the series, Akasha.

I've just finished reading a book by Edith Hahn Beer. She managed to live under a friends identity in Germany during the second world war.

There is something about this story that I don't understand. Especially I don't understand why she stayed in Germany due to a man that didn't want to marry her. And why did she leave little Gretl behind.

I just finished Rena's Promise about two sisters who survived 3 1/2 years in Auschwitz.  Great book, but I could sure use a little more light reading right now and I'm up at all hours, so....Any suggestions?  I love murder mysteries and beach reads.

AVP - SO glad you're enjoying War and Peace!  If you ever see the movie after wading through the book, you'll wanna throw something at the t.v.  I know that movies are never like the book, but in this case, it's just blasphemous.

I haven't read all PG's book's yet (she has about a dozen books on both the Tudor era and other historical fiction's out right now)

Amongst other things the book is about his part of the jet set life. I'll just mention one thins, as it has some royal print  :tehe:
Apparently at The Lanesborough he met a girl Magdalena in the bar. He had a romance with her but he discovered that she was an escort. She had made a bookdeal about her life as an escort. Amongst others a ministers, actors, and royals "the most wellknown in the english royal family".

But her bookdeal was dropped.  :sly:

'Vrijmetselarij voor dummy's' (original in Dutch)  a good basic book on free masonry, good read on the different structures and symbols they use.
'Mathilde: Prinses der harten' by Astrid Bammens (original in Dutch)   bio of Belgium crown princess, interesting details about the early years her life and the start of the relationship although it stay's a bit vague and boringly proper, it was written by a huge royalist (she has a small private museum on the Belgian RF) so it's not really objective  :tehe:

'Young Prince Philip' by Philip Eade, untill now it's a good read, fascinating family history peppered with little anecdotes of a young boy antic's (kinda odd to imagine PP as a young boy playing pranks on his sisters  :tehe:)
'Final Curtsey' by Margaret Rhodes, it's a memoires book about HM's cousin and her relation to QM, HM and princess Margaret. I plan to read that on my SD holiday so I'll tell ya more about it after wards but I think it will be a 'nice' book: nothing too juicy but not too dry either.

"Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate
Have Christians become so preoccupied with the major sins of our society that we have lost sight of our need to deal with our own more subtle sins? Jerry Bridges returns to his trademark theme of holiness and addresses a dozen clusters of specific "acceptable" sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves - such as jealousy, anger, pride, unthankfulness, and judgmentalism. Jerry writes not from a height of spiritual accomplishment but from the trenches of his own battles with sin. In his admonitions, Jerry offers a message of hope in the profound mercy of the gospel and the transforming grace of God as the means to overcoming our subtle sins. If you lead a small group or Bible class, don't miss the companion discussion guide for this important book. See inside for details."

Right now, I'm reading, (other than the Bible nonstop because of a million reasons), Lennon, The Man, the Myth, The Music - The Definitive Life by Tim Riley.  The best I've ever read.  I also contacted the author because anything Beatle/Lennon related, I buy hard copy or buy and not open and he's going to sign all of his books on Lennon for me.  Super cool guy.

I am currently reading through Deutronomy and I am loving it. I am using the Today's English version and that version is awesome. I love Todays English Version as opposed to the others for instance

Proverbs 17:27
In New KJV

" He who has knowledge spares his words And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit

In Todays English
"Those who are sure of themselves do not talk all the time. People who stay calm have real insight"

Compare

In addition I am reading 3 other books'

Kiss that Frog - Brain Tracy et al
The Resolution for Women  - Priscilla Shirer
Focus - Stephen R Covey

I am reading "Lord of the Isle: The Extravagant Life and Times of Colin Tennant " .
It is about the life of the 3rd Baron Glenconner. The man who bought the private island of Mustique in the West Indies and was a good friend of Margaret. The man was neurotic, eccentric, mean, wife abuser, rude to others, though never to Margaret, and also a generous man.
He was notorious for his naked Mustique parties attended by Margaret  and very famous celebrities.

Finished Argo by Antonio Mendez. What was interesting was the artistry, ingenuity, imagination, and creativity used. To learn about the author's artist life. The history. Pretty riveting. My natural curiosity had me looking up John Chambers (Jerome in the book) and others.

Becoming Light by Erica Jong. A book of poetry.

the story and characters are a bit thin but apparently it's a teenybook so....

American History. Empire of the Summer Moon. It's about the Comanche  Native American tribe (my relatives  :tehe:) and the Comanche's "last" chief Quanah Parker. It's very well told (in the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) and interesting.

Stefan Zweig The Royal Game/Chess story.

It is about a man who was imprisoned by the nazis.

Stefan Zweig himself fled from the nazis to England and later to Brazil. He committed suicide during WWII in the believe that the nazis would conquer the world.

^I love Zweig. I still have on my to read list his autobiography book but it's so sad that I cannot make me read it.

I am reading a couple of books at the same time, I just finished The book of tea by Okakura. Such a beautiful book, not exactly about tea more about the tea philosophy of life. And you can find it free on the web.

Also furious love about Taylor/Burton destructive love. Interesting but too much of the same and it gets boring. It also spoils you all their films.

I have several books going but am focusing on A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens.  That book is so much more than any movie ever envisioned.  I try to read it every year.

And the Gift of the Magi - O'Henry Stories

Killing Jesus, Sycamore Row and for fun, Nothing Stays in Vegas

^ I've read good reviews but I'm a bit scared that they are overhyped, are they really good?

I'm going to reread Harry Potter and I'm scared that I won't like them. They are such a big part of my teenage years that not liking them can be a big impact. (I'm such a nerd  :shy: ) But I've been rereading a couple of books I liked years ago and now they seemed so badly written.

^I'm re-reading, too, because I'm just so unimpressed with what's out there that's newly released for some reason.  So, it's Hollywood by Garson Kanin (I cannot recommend this book enough) and The Moon's A Balloon by David Niven.  Very restful before-bed books, I think.

Oh, and a real beaut that's from the memoirs of Marie Antoinette's hairdresser Leonard.  Riveting but can't remember the name.  Super good fluff however inaccurate or what have you.  For instance, I was unaware that hair salons as we know them were not created until this period.  At least not in France.  Your maid, sister, mother or whomever did your hair.  Leonard & bros changed that, along with Marie A. and it's sprinkled with just the right amount of 'being there'.

As for H Potter, all I can say is that my son re-read it and was disappointed but I think that's due to the fact that it's not 'new' anymore, the story has been warped a bit by being put on the screen so the initial thrill is gone.  But, maybe it'll be better for you, Alex.  Hope so!

Slogging through "Queen's House - A Social History of Buckingham Palace" by Edna Healey
Half the time I'm not sure if it's about the people that have occupied it or the people that worked on it.
Was surprised to read that there was/is a great deal of shoddy workmanship in the expanded building.
Guess no one is immune from being defrauded by reno contractors.

In preparation for the fall semester, a niece was assigned a small (and for her, boring) book about the settlement of Massachusetts. The balance of the assignment required a paper about the time period using other sources. After hearing much complaining, I recommended she read "The Wordy Shipmates" by Sarah Vowell. The writing style is unconventional (no chapters). Her book shows the differences between the Mayflower Puritans and Bay Colony Puritans. Not the sanitized Thanksgiving version of the 17th century settlements. Since niece wanted to discuss the book, I had to read it again. Sarah is a commentator for NPR. I read for awhile, set it aside, and then picked it up and read a little more. I liked her comparison's with more modern history. So did my niece.
---
Finished reading "The Fall of the House of Dixie - The Civil War and the Social Revolution That Transformed the South" by Bruce Levine. Was recommended to me when I told someone that I wasn't going to read yet another US Civil War novel that was a tour of battlefields and endless military strategy opinions. This book is not one of those kinds of books. The South controlled the 3 branches of US govt for most of the years until the Civil War. This book is about the economic and social effects of the Southern aristocracy before and during the war using diaries, news accounts. The books make very clear the sharp differences between the North and South attitudes towards fellow citizens and residents.
---
All of the above books are published as e-books, which is the format I read them in.

I haven't finished Marie Antoinette by Fraser because the story is so tragic, that I cannot move on. But the book was good in case you are interested in a more serious bio of Queen MA. Though the book by the hairdresser sounds interesting. There is also a book about how luxury started on the french royal court and that one was really good however I do not remember the name. If you are interested I could look it up.

Harry Potter is being ok. I am already on the 5th book. The first three ones are really fun although I can know see that the writing is a bit lame and there are some points I didn't notice before that I do not like.

Pense - you just added a few more books to my list of "to be read".  Thanks - the one on the puritans sounds especially good.  I've read some very good books on the politico-social south - I read a very original one were the author had combed through land ownership records and agricultural sales records.  His assertion was that the image of a southern culture defined by wealthy planters was inaccurate - rather that it was more like Tobacco Row - small holders with no more than three slaves were the majority.  Mostly livestock raising not cotton.

I am reading a couple of books now - the latest Bernard Cornwall in the Saxon Tales and a very good book on WWI - Sleepwalkers.

Borrowed 3 e-books that the librarian recommended and next time I will look for the other librarian for recommendations. One book I slogged through because I was intrigued by the bits of information that I had not read elsewhere about the San Francisco earthquake. The other two books never made it past the second chapter.

Luckily, read/reading two more books with better results. Was asked by a teacher friend to read a YA book and give her a 3-line synopsis as well as any heads-up about iffy character situations. Synopsis: Priest and girlfriend go kayaking and whale plays with the kayak. That night priest begins to hallucinate and hear voices. The lives of many living things depend on his determination to find the source. There were some references to bad guys wanting to make advances to priest's girlfriend but were always thwarted. "Exodus 2022" By Kenneth G Bennett. It was a good quick read with an interesting ending - suitable for sequels.

Current read is more interesting. "The Secret Rooms: A True Story of a Haunted Castle, a Plotting Duchess, and a Family Secret" by Catherine Bailey is about the 9th Duke of Rutland. His mother was Violet Manners; one of his sisters is Diana Manners (Lady Diana Cooper). The 9th Duke was obsessed with preserving the family papers but destroyed certain papers pertaining to his life. The book is about filling in the missing links. Of necessity, it also describes parts of aristo society at the time which is late 19th to middle 20th century. I had not intended to read about the 9th Duke. I was actually looking for a book about place names that are not pronounced as they are spelled in English. For instance, Worcester and Gloucestershire. Belvoir cracked me up. I had to look up its history -- and then I found the book.

^Other than Mike Todd, all paled next to Elizabeth, to me.  I've read that, in person, Richard Burton had an electricity that never transferred to many.  No clue, but I agree but enjoyed the book.

Am reading The Wright Brothers by David McCullough of John Adams fame.  I cannot recommend it highly enough.  It's not all technical about flight design but about their lives and overcoming a multitude of challenges.

Yes, I agree! Mike Todd seems the only one who was good for her both professionally and for herself. If he hadn't died I doubt Taylor would have divorced him or at least they would have lasted a long time.

I preferred the first part of the book it was more about Taylor but the second part it make it all seem like Burton was a lost lamb that Taylor had misdirected. Not that Liz was perfect but the book doesn't portray her as someone whining all the time like him. This is the reason I ended up bored with Burton.

Aren't they also making a film about the Wright brothers?

@Mia maybe you would like How the mind works by Pinker? Very thought provoking for me.

Is it so bad? I loved the film but I didn't want spoilers and for the first time in my life I avoided the book until I watched the the film.

I'm reading now the Dresden files. It's a supernatural/fantasy series about a wizard that works with the police. The idea is good but the characters are not well developed and some mysteries are not interesting enough. Though I'm still on the 3rd book and will continue the series to see how it goes.

^I didn't see the movie, Alex, so I'm no help at all there but the book itself, for me, was like tap dancing in quicksand and then I skipped to the end which isn't an ending at all.  What a disaster.  The plot lines stop for no reason, the characters are so hateful and even the author, I think, said she got stuck somewhere in the book and just sort of wandered out to the finish.  It read that way to me anyhow.  I requested my money back and got it.

Title: Re: What book are you reading right now?

^SPOILER: the film changed the ending. So you may like it better, though it's a weird ending. I think you won't like it either.

But for me what was entertaining was that the female MC was hateful. It was refreshing to see that kind of character. I also liked how the actress portrayed her. And Affleck was perfect as husband. Even the director mentions how suspicious it is that he is a natural at cheating. Then his divorced happened  :laugh

War and Peace. I still don't know who is the main character even when I've already read 300 pages or so. Also sometimes it is too similar to a soap opera but with the war in the middle. Although the writing is very good in some parts even when I'm reading a translation, he can make a war and battles interesting and making you experience what a normal solider would have.

Marie Antoinette's Head:  The Royal Hairdresser

Quote
Marie Antoinette’s Head: The Royal Hairdresser, The Queen, and the Revolution charts the rise of Léonard Autie from humble origins as a country barber in the south of France to the inventor of the Pouf and premier hairdresser to Queen Marie-Antoinette.
By unearthing a variety of sources from the 18th and 19th centuries, including memoirs (including Léonard’s own), court documents, and archived periodicals the author, French History professor and expert Will Bashor, tells Autie’s mostly unknown story.

Fabulous and fun read.

I just finished And The Sea Will Tell by V. Bugliosi.  About the Palmyra atoll murders.  A couple from my other home, San Diego, were murdered down there in the mid-1970s by a pair of total losers.  I somewhat recall the outrage at the time but now I see why everyone hated Bugliosi so much then.  Or at least 10 years later when the trials finally finished.  Grisly story.  He defended the girlfriend.  Wish I hadn't read it.

Yes, it was such a tragedy that Emily died young before writing anything more. Her poetry is beautiful and Wurhering Heights is so unusual a book for its time. No wonder it's been so popular. I like it better than Jane Eyre in some aspects, actually. In many ways it appeals to people now more than it did then, I think.

I have to agree, there is a timeless power to wuthering h. "the utterance of a baby god" as someone wrote about it. Em was writing another book when she died but it's thought that Charlotte destroyed it, possibly at Emily's wish. It is sad that none of the Gondal stories have survived.
